Ithaca College faculty and staff are invited to register NOW for the first in the Ithaca College Gerontology Workshop series: "Aging in Place: The Role of Universal Design," to be held Wednesday, April 4, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. in the Longview auditorium, 1 Bella Vista Drive, Ithaca. IC faculty and students may attend at no charge, but advance registration is required and can be done online here.

Esther Greenhouse, an environmental gerontologist specializing in the impact of the built environment on the level of functioning and well-being of seniors, will highlight the elements of universal design, an approach that can enable persons of all ages to live at the highest level of independence possible.

 Ithacan Hits a New High

 The Ithacan had its best showing ever at the Spring National College Media Convention in New York City last weekend. The Columbia Scholastic Press Association awarded The Ithacan two Gold Crown Awards for the newspaper and a Silver Crown Award for the website. In addition, the paper won the Apple Award for Best in Show in its category.

 The details: The Newspaper Gold Crowns were for Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 (academic year 2010–11, Libby Sile ’11, editor in chief). The Digital Silver Crown was for this year (Aaron Edwards ’12, editor; Honest Charley Bodkin ’15, webmaster). The Apple Award for Best in Show, presented by the College Media Association, sponsors of the convention, is based on a single-issue entry from 2011. The paper entered its "Season of Protest" issue from November 10, 2011.

Jennifer Dunnington, a supervising music editor for many of Martin Scorsese's films including Hugo and Gangs of New York, will speak on March 27 from 4:00-6:30 p.m. in the Park Auditorium.

Dunningham’s many awards include a Primetime Emmy for “Outstanding Sound Editing for a Series” for her work in Boardwalk Empire.

She will talk about her role in these films and her collaboration with composer Howard Shore.

Steven Mauk, professor of saxophone, was recently honored by the North American Saxophone Alliance with an honorary life membership. This is the highest award presented by the US/Canadian association and was bestowed at their Biennial Conference held at Arizona State University (Tempe) from March 15-18. Included in the short list of past honorees are Sonny Rollins and Jamey Aebersold (jazz legends), and Sigurd Raschér, Jean-Marie Londeix, Larry Teal, Donald Sinta, Frederick Hemke, and Eugene Rousseau (classical artists/pedagogues). The award is given for significant contributions in the fields of saxophone performance, pedagogy, research/scholarship, and service.

The Sustainability Café on Monday, March 26th, will feature dairyman Collin McCarthy from Spruce Haven Farm, addressing the topic of Agriculture and Hydrofracking: decisionmaking and sustainability in rural New York.”  The Café will be held in Center for Natural Sciences Room 112 at 4:00PM.

Come give climbing at the rock wall a try! Never climbed before? That’s ok. Staff members are available to teach you the basics during all open hours. All members of the Ithaca College campus community are entitled to two FREE days of climbing at the wall. After that, day passes are $5 and we have a new prorated price for semester passes fo $15. Climbing shoes and harness are included. Wall hours are as follows:

Monday- 7pm - 9pm
Tuesday – 7pm - 9pm
Wednesday – 9pm - 11pm
Thursday – 5pm - 7pm
Friday – 2pm - 4pm
Sunday – 7pm - 9pm
