Relay is a 12-hour overnight fundraising event that promotes advocacy for cancer research, celebrates lives lost, and stimulates hope for a cure. Faculty and staff are invited to attend and support this event, to be held on February 27th, 2010 in Barton Hall at Cornell University. Ithaca College was able to raise over $100,000 for the American Cancer Society last year, and we aim to increase the number of donations for this year’s event.   Donations can be made online at www.relayforlife.org/ithacacollege. You can also purchase luminaria bags in honor of loved ones for $5 each, which will be lit all night long.   If you have any questions, please e-mail cacithaca@gmail.com. Hope to see you there!

 

The tenth annual observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is Sunday, February 7. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) is a national effort to increase awareness, participation, and support for HIV education, prevention, care, and treatment among African-American people.

Sandra Steingraber, will speak on “The Importance of Journalism and Independent Media in an Age of Ecological Crisis” on February 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Park Hall Auditorium. Her talk is sponsored by the Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM).

Steingraber is the author of “Living Downstream: An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment.” An expert on the environmental causes of cancer and reproductive problems, Steingraber is herself a survivor of bladder cancer, a disease linked to chemical pollutants. After “Living Downstream” was published, “Ms.” magazine named her a “woman of the year” and the Sierra Club called her “the new Rachel Carson.” A documentary film based on “Living Downstream” will be released this spring.
