Girish Karnad, one of India's foremost living playwrights, will be visiting Ithaca College from October 26-October 29, 2009 as the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival (FLEFF) Distinguished Writer in Residence. This visit is also supported by substantial help from the English Department, the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies (DIIS), Honors Program, and the South Asian Studies Program at Cornell.

Brad Hougham will present a free recital at 7 pm on Monday, October 19 in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.  He will be joined by pianist Diane Birr for a program including Mahler's Rückert Lieder, Gerald Finzi's "Let Us Garlands Bring," Histoire naturelles by Maurice Ravel, and other works.

I am pleased to announce that the Board of Trustees decided at their fall meeting last week to create two new endowed funds for the benefit of faculty and staff at Ithaca College. One of these endowments will provide funding for faculty professional development and the other will provide funding for staff professional development as well as for one time merit awards for exceptional performance.

Naeem Inayatullah, of the Department of Politics, attended the 41st annual meeting of the International Studies Association (Northeast region) in Baltimore on October 2-3, 2009.

Professor Inayatullah presented "Failing to Teach: Tarrying with the Pedagogical Negative." He also served as discussant for five papers in a panel titled, "Culture, Race, and Identity in Global Politics.”

The Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs seeks Ithaca College students interested in presenting their undergraduate research at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) in Spring 2010 in Montana. Presentation abstracts and a travel funding request form must be submitted no later than December 4, 2009.

Park School Interim Dean and Professor of Strategic Communication Diane Gayeski was the keynote speaker at the US Coast Guard Training and Human Performance Conference in Williamsburg, VA on September 24.  Her presentation, "What Makes Nexters Tick?" covered critical social and psychological factors impacting the design of training for young adults.

Three IC students minoring in International Communications, Daniel Haack ('10), Susannah Faulkner ('12) and Joe Bagliere ('11), in collaboration with Dr. Katalin Lustyik (Assistant Professor, TVR) will present a research paper titled "Disney, Al Jazeera, the BBC and the Global Children's TV Landscape" at the Global Media and Communication (GlobalFusion) Conference taking place on October 16-18 at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Lustyik will also present her study "Transnational Children’s TV in the Global Media Landscape: The Case of Nickelodeon in the South Pacific."
