Dave Allen, who has been an engineer in the Park School of Communications for 44 years, will be retiring at the end of June. A recently published paper on ionic liquids coauthored by IC students Jesse Kleingardner, Ryan Wibby, John Dymon, and assistant professor Anna Larsen (with collaborators from Queen's University, Vassar College, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison) made it to the top ten list of the most accessed papers of the last month in Dalton Transactions, the leading European journal for inorganic and organometallic chemistry.

Ithaca College finished in 14th place in the final standings for the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. The standings for the contest (formerly known as the Sears Cup) are determined by a school's finish in NCAA playoff competition in selected sports.

Ithaca, which placed 21st last year, is one of nine schools to have placed in the top 30 in each of the award's first 13 years. Ithaca finished with 585.00 points, trailing 13th-place Wisconsin-Stevens Point by 2.25 points.

Assistant professor of physics Luke Keller spoke in May at the invitation of the Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education at a panel discussion of imagination, its role in education, and how imagination is related to innovation.

The Lincoln Center Institute, the educational arm of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City, awards grants to New York City public schools that incorporate imagination -- particularly the development of imagination in their students -- as a focus across the curriculum. The panel discussion was part of this year's Imagination Awards ceremony.

Associate professor of politics Naeem Inayatullah presented a paper: "Shed No Tears: Wealth, Race, and Death in Hegel's Necro-Philosophy" at a workshop titled, "Hegel and International Relations." The workshop was held at the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland, June 5-6, 2008.

The work of Jason Hamilton (Department of Biology) and his colleagues is reported in "Sustaining a Sustainable Education" in the Ithaca Times newspaper. They have recently submitted a proposal to found New Roots School, a charter school in Ithaca.

The goal is to create a sustainability-based high school in which students are taught through integration of theories and practices of sustainable education. If accepted, the school will open in September 2009 with an anticipated roster of 50 ninth-grade and 50 tenth-grade students.
