"Many of us have experienced the frustration of trying to get stuck coffee beans out of a dispenser, throwing out expensive paint that has dried out and hardened, or even being caught in a traffic jam. These phenomena, along with the better known glass transition, are all examples of jamming---the transition of a many-body system from a fluid-like state to a disordered solid-like state with an extremely long relaxation time. The nature of the jamming transition is one of the oldest unsolved problems in condensed matter physics."

Jostens Representative on Campus

The Tompkins Renewable Energy Education Alliance (TREEA) is inviting all members of the community to its "Community Forum on Energy," an event designed to provide individuals, businesses, and institutions with the knowledge and contacts needed to effectively become more energy independent through conservation and renewable energy systems. This not-for-profit event will be held November 17 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Emerson Suites at Ithaca College, and will serve all community members who are interested in learning how they can benefit from clean energy.

Stephen Younger, assistant professor of economics, participated in the Consulta de San Jose conference in San Jose, Costa Rica, in October. The conference asks experts to evaluate solutions to various social and economic problems, and then choose the most promising ones.
