(168 words) Asma Barlas, Politics, presented a paper, "When Gender is a Problem in Qur'anic Exegesis," at a workshop on Gender and Tafsir Studies at the New York University Abu Dhabi Institute (NYUAD) on April 9. The paper questions the usefulness of using gender as a category to interpret some of the Qur'an's teachings and also argues against the essentialist notion that women's readings of scripture (or, texts in general) are necessarily a corrective to men's.
