(168 words) Asma Barlas, Politics, presented a paper, "When Gender is a Problem in Qur'anic Exegesis," at a workshop on Gender and Tafsir Studies at the New York University Abu Dhabi Institute (NYUAD) on April 9. The paper questions the usefulness of using gender as a category to interpret some of the Qur'an's teachings and also argues against the essentialist notion that women's readings of scripture (or, texts in general) are necessarily a corrective to men's. Thursday, April 19, 2018 at 7:30pm in 104 Park Center (Business School): Dr. Nicole Hassoun, associate professor of philosophy at Binghamton University, will give a talk on how the human right to health can inspire creative progress on the goal of increasing health care access for the global poor. The talk is free and open to the public.
