Naeem Inayatullah presented “Two to Tango: the seductions of capitalism” at Skidmore College, April 3, 2017.

The talk assesses the strengths and weaknesses of capitalism seen as a culture.  It highlights and troubles those elements that we seem unwilling to endorse as well as those that we seem happy to condemn.  Rejecting facile gestures and bypassing the usual cant, it aims to make what is familiar about capitalism seem strange as well as to bring home what seems alien.  The hope is to clear the ground for debating capitalism's cultural values.

The talk can be read here: https://faculty.ithaca.edu/naeem/Talks/

Do you speak Elvish?

Contributed by Maria DiFrancesco on 04/07/17

That caught your attention, didn't it?

If you speak Elvish (or even just English), why not expand your knowledge and understanding of another language?

Gaining access to another person's language fosters appreciation for diverse attitudes and cultural practices, which in turn breeds tolerance of others. When you study a language that is not your own, you begin to see the rich ways in which humans use language to communicate and to preserve their individual and collective histories.

Ithaca College offers classes in Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, and Latin. We offer majors and minors in French/Francophone Studies, German Area Studies, Italian Studies, and Spanish, as well as several Teacher Education options. If that doesn't pique your interest, think about a minor in Linguistics or Translation.
