Ithaca Athletics is having another promotion planned for the  November 5th football game against Buffalo State. The promotion is called Club Day, where all clubs and organizations are invited to come to the game, receive PA recognition, table and have a chance to enter a raffle to win gift cards to Texas Roadhouse.

You are invited to attend an important lunch on Monday, October 24th at 11:30 am in the Emerson Suites to welcome to campus 15 FLEFF Diversity Scholars.  This represents an opportunity for you to help Ithaca College in its recruitment efforts to become more diverse and inclusive.

The Diversity Scholars are graduate students who have expressed an interest in exploring Ithaca College's artistic and intellectual environment. The Diversity Scholars will attend the World Music Festival Concert on Sunday night, October 23 and three Research Forums on October 24th. The 11:30 am lunch will feature Raza Rumi, Ithaca City of Asylum Scholar in Residence at Ithaca College, as the keynote speaker.

From October 19 to 21, the Ithaca College Board of Trustees and I will be on campus for our first full board meeting of the academic year. I always look forward to the October meeting, because I get to experience the energy of our campus when the semester is in full swing.

After our meetings conclude, I will share updates about our work. In the meantime, I wanted to send you a preview of what we will be working on this fall and beyond.

Dr. Evis Sammoutis was recently awarded a highly competitive Chamber Music America Commission to compose a new woodwind quintet for District5. The commission is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the premiere of the new work will take place in fall 2017.

Ithaca College Theatre presents Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Tony-Award winning musical, “Company,” a mature, multidimensional examination of modern romantic relationships. 

Performances will be held in the Hoerner Theatre in Dillingham Center on Oct. 25, 27, 28 and 29, Nov. 2, 3, 4 and 5 at 8 p.m., and on Oct. 30 and Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased at the Ithaca College box office in Dillingham Center or online at Ithaca.ticketforce.com. The box office is open Monday through Thursday, noon–5 p.m.; and Friday, noon–4 p.m. Tickets can also be purchased over the phone at (607) 274-3224. Tickets range from $8 to $16.

This is a reminder that there will be an information session on the Education Minor on Tuesday, October 18th from 5:30 to 6:30 in Williams 314.

There will be additional sessions on Thursday, October 20th (12:10-1:00) and Friday, October 21st (9:00-9:50).

 

Asma Barlas, professor of Politics, has published the lead essay for a round table on Feminism and Islam in the current Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion (Fall, 2016).  The essay, "Secular and Feminist Critiques of the Qur'an: Anti-hermeneutics as Liberation?" has six respondents with a short rejoinder from Barlas. The Journal can be accessed here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2979/jfemistudreli.32.issue-2 

A panel of the National Advertising Review Board (NARB) has recommended that DirecTV, LLC, modify claims made for its satellite television services to better disclose to consumers that limited programming is available in 4k, or ultra high-definition format, modify its claims that DirecTV is wireless, and discontinue a “free upgrade” to Genie HD DVR claim.

Individuals who had stroke more than 6 months ago are needed for a study investigating the impact of physical therapy on walking and balance. Participants will be randomized to exercise in the water or on land using a treadmill 3 times per week for 4 weeks and will be compensated for their time.
