Please join me on Thursday, October 1 for the first Faculty Colloquium of the academic year and the first Faculty Scholarship, Research, and Creative Inquiry Fair. 

Gwen Seaquist, J.D., Professor and Coordinator of Legal Studies, School of Business, will be presenting “Independent Contractor or Employee: Financial and Legal Implications,” which is co-authored by Alka Bramhandkar, Professor, Department of Finance and International Business, and Marlene Barken, Associate Professor, Department of Legal Studies. 

Dr. Seaquist has a JD degree from the University of Mississippi Law School and was a visiting researcher at Harvard Law School.  She recently finished her fourth textbook: Labor Relations, Bridgepoint Education, Inc.

Faculty and staff are encouraged to self-nominate for service on self-study committees associated with our Middle States accreditation process. Student self-nominations will be solicited after the Spring 2016 course schedule is published so spring course schedules can be taken into account. Self-study committees will begin their work in Spring 2016 and should complete their responsibilities by the end of Spring 2017.

IC Circle K International held their first meeting on September 2nd,making dozens of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to donate to a local homeless shelter. With both new and returning members, the student organization is excited to continue their work as IC's collegiate Key Club, focusing on community service, leadership development, and friendship. Andrea Wollin, '17, this year’s Vice-President, states, “Circle K is known for helping out the community, but it has become much more than that to me, because by giving back I have gained a greater understanding of how much this wonderful community has helped me grow and mature as an individual.”

The intersection of personal development and volunteerism is clear in Circle K, where the organization maintains traditions such as playing Bingo with residents of Longview Assisted Living each Monday.

As many of you are already aware, Dr. Shaianne Osterreich has decided to step away from the Ithaca Seminar program after six years of outstanding leadership. As a result, a three year appointment (with possibility of renewal) as Ithaca Seminar Coordinator is open to interested faculty. The person in this position provides leadership in the ongoing oversight, faculty development, and assessment of the Ithaca Seminar, oversees the first year ICC kickoff events, and works collaboratively with the Director of the ICC and faculty and staff across campus on Ithaca Seminar scheduling and programming. Join us for the Work/Life Presentation of Sleep Success: It's not what you think! As a counseling health psychologist, Assistant Professor Jessye Cohen-Filipic has worked with many people who are having sleep problems. In this presentation she will discuss briefly the importance of sleep and then focus on sleep hygiene and strategies for getting a good night’s sleep. Jessye will offer tips on improving your sleeping environment, relaxing before bedtime, and getting on a good sleep schedule.

The 14th annual Cross Cultural Leadership Retreat (CCLR) for Ithaca College students will be held on November 13-15, 2015. CCLR is a two and a half day retreat where students explore various aspects of diversity and make connections to leadership strategies. During the retreat, the entire group will unite to participate in a series of educational sessions and discuss issues as a large group, as well as in smaller, informal conversations.

On behalf of Provost Rifkin, I am pleased to invite you to a presentation by Ms. Ulrike Leibrecht, Managing Director of CEPA Europe, an organization offering customized educational programs abroad in support of faculty-led short-term programs. Ms. Leibrecht will speak on the advantages of a partnership with CEPA and on the development of academically focused faculty-led program opportunities in Europe, Asia, and Brazil. Staff who are considering the development of non-credit short-term travel programs for students are also encouraged to attend.
