A test of the Ithaca College Emergency Notification System (ENS) will take place during the noon hour this Thursday, April 9. It will include a test of the Outdoor Warning System, which features a siren tone and a loudspeaker message. There is no need to take any action in response to the tests.

 Critical Health Issues, HLTH 20500 is a 3 credit online Summer Course offered during the two week May Session.  ICC Attribute: Diversity. Social Science. Self and Society. ICC Theme: World of Systems.

Critical Health Issues is about the evolution and analysis of U.S. health policy and the provision of health services, a vast enterprise that includes all sectors of government and industry.  In the U.S.,  health and medical establishments account for about 1 out of every 10 workers and about 17 cents out of every dollar spent. Even with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, there are still more than 25 million people without insurance.  Health is also about racial, gender, ethnic, and class issues, as well as the quality of services received and overall health status. The poor, immigrants, and minorities are also affected by inequalities. Poverty is increasing in the U.S. and this affects health.

War,Hunger, and Genocide: An International Health Perspective will be offered online during Summer Session II beginning on June 29- July 31.

Course description: An investigation of the cost -- human and economic -- of organized violence, including genocide, and the efforts being made to ameliorate or eliminate the devastation. Particular emphasis is placed on the role that can be played by health care professionals who believe that war may be a preventable phenomenon that can be eradicated by traditional public health methods that have triumphed over other major health problems in the past. 3 credits

Brooke presented on "Agricultural and Culinary Tourism on the Big Island of Hawai'i: Assessment of Current Models and Directions for the Future" at the Society for Applied Anthropology Meetings, Pittsburgh, PA, March 26. 

The presentation was based on research conducted during her fall 2014 sabbatical at the University of Hawai'i, Hilo.

Mark Kastel, Senior Farm Policy Analyst
at The Cornucopia Institute, a farm policy research group based in Wisconsin, will present a talk entitled:  Connecting the Dots: Climate Change, Human Health and the Economy — We Can’t Afford Not to Eat Organic Food.  The speech will be held in the Park School Auditorium on the Ithaca College campus on April 14, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.

Kastel is a nationally recognized expert on food and farm policy. The Cornucopia Institute acts as an organic industry watchdog.

Provost Linda Petrosino announced today that Vincent DeTuri, Associate Professor in Chemistry, will serve a three-year term as Director of the Integrative Core Curriculum, beginning June 1, 2015. Vince’s experience as a department chair, as co-chair of the all-campus Academic Assessment Committee, and as assessment coordinator for the School of Humanities & Sciences will be valuable assets in his new role of providing leadership to the ongoing implementation of the ICC.

There will be a fingerprint scanning session in the Department of Education Office in Phillips 194 (next to the Bookstore) on Tuesday, April 21st from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.   Fingerprinting along with criminal background clearance is required for teacher certification in NY State and recommended for students prior to student teaching.  For information and to sign up for a 10 minute appointment, students should stop by the Department of Education.  Be sure to pick up a yellow instruction sheet when you sign up for an appointment since there are two required steps prior to having your prints scanned.  The costs will be $89.75 on-line to NYSED and a $25 special fee for the use of the LiveScan machine.  The instructions describe how these fees are to be paid.  For further information or with any questions contact Bonita Ferguson at 607-274-1488 or bferguson@ithaca.edu.

The seventh annual Izzy Awards for outstanding achievement in independent media will be presented to author Naomi Klein and investigative journalist David Sirota on Wednesday, April 15, 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Suites. Both award-winners will give talks at the event, which is open to the public.

The Izzys, named for legendary 20th century journalist I. F. “Izzy” Stone, are bestowed by the Park Center for Independent Media (PCIM).
