On Thursday, February 12th, IC Project Sunshine teamed up with Active Minds to host a community service event in IC Square to spread positivity around Valentine's Day. The groups organized an event to make uplifting cards for children in healthcare facilities. The cards were completely blank on the outside and said "Sending You Sunshine!". The only rule of the game was that people were not allowed to add additional words to the cards, just creative illustrations to make a child's day a little bit brighter. Many people came out to color and have a relaxing night inside while supporting a great cause. As a result of the event, nearly 100 children will have cards to brighten up their stay in a health facility.

When it comes to living spaces on college, there are a number of organizations that work to promote residence hall events and address student concerns. The Residence Hall Association is a student organization committed to making the campus's residence halls a fun, safe place to live.
 
Secretary Julie Erickson, who has been involved with RHA since her first semester of freshman year, said she works on the campus change committee within RHA to help solve residential hall issues and work on improving sustainability-related initiatives. 

Erickson said she was first impressed by the RHA's influence on campus. She said RHA's mission is to cater to both the residents and the on-campus community.

 Beatriz Montilla (Spanish) and Dr. Sherry Deckman (Education) recently published a jointly-authored chapter, “Being Tall Isn’t the Same as Being Black: The Challenges of Critical Perspective-Taking in a Nearly All-White Classroom,” in Jennifer L. Martin’s, Racial Battle Fatigue: Insights from the Front Lines of Social Justice Advocacy. The chapter explores Beatriz’s and Sherry’s perspectives on cultivating empathy in race-focused higher education classes. The two discuss the inherent benefits and challenges for, as well as the rights and responsibilities of, faculty members and students in such courses.

After 12 years of dedicated service to Ithaca College, Associate Dean Margaret (Margie) Arnold has announced that she will be leaving Ithaca College to start the next chapter of her life in Boston.  Please join me in wishing Margie the very best as she leaves Ithaca College.  Margie’s last day on campus will be February 27, 2015.

James Mick, assistant professor of music education, traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama this past weekend to guest conduct the Alabama All-State Consort Orchestra. Middle school and high school string students from across Alabama auditioned in the fall semester to participate in the festival, which was hosted by the Alabama Orchestra Association. Rehearsals were held at the University of Alabama on Friday and Saturday with the culminating performance occurring on Sunday, February 15, 2015.
