Hogben on 02/18/15 Beatriz Montilla (Spanish) and Dr. Sherry Deckman (Education) recently published a jointly-authored chapter, “Being Tall Isn’t the Same as Being Black: The Challenges of Critical Perspective-Taking in a Nearly All-White Classroom,” in Jennifer L. Martin’s, Racial Battle Fatigue: Insights from the Front Lines of Social Justice Advocacy. The chapter explores Beatriz’s and Sherry’s perspectives on cultivating empathy in race-focused higher education classes. The two discuss the inherent benefits and challenges for, as well as the rights and responsibilities of, faculty members and students in such courses.
