Gladys M. Varona-Lacey, Professor of Spanish and Latin American literature recently published an essay entitled  "El rescate de una adolescencia cubana a través del recuerdo. Un estudio de Nieve en La Habana. Confesiones de un cubanito de Carlos Eire" in the volume, Cuba: Arte y literatura en el exilio. Eds. Grace Piney and James J. Pancrazio. Madrid: Legua Editorial, 2011.

 French Conversation Group

 Continuing with Language Conversation Groups, The Language Center, 316 Gannett Center, is hosting a weekly French Conversation Group. The meeting will be held Tuesdays at 4:00pm. All students, faculty and staff wishing to speak with others in French are welcome. A native French speaker will be the group facilitator.

Diane Birr and Nathan Hess, piano faculty members in the School of Music, served on the faculty at the Rocky Ridge Music Center (RRMC) near Estes Park, Colorado, where they taught piano, coached chamber music and performed in the Music in the Mountains Faculty Concert series.

RRMC offers a variety of summer music programs for students 10 years of age through adult. Prof. Birr and Hess taught at the Junior Session, held August 2-14.

Society for Music Teacher Education

Faculty and student members of the Ithaca College Music Education department were well represented at the 2011 Symposium on Music Teacher Education; Intersections of Practice, Research, and Policy, held this week at the University of North Carolina Greensboro. 

Dr. Dan Isbell with undergraduate students, Dana Arbaugh, Devon LePore, and Christina Santoro presented: "The Initial Teaching Experience of Preservice Music Educators"

Dr. Keith Kaiser and Dr. Susan Avery presented: "The Alumni Cohort Project (ACP): Utilizing Alumni Cohorts to Provide Multiple Data Sets for Program Evaluation"

Dr. Chad West presented: Perceptions of Ability to Teach Middle School Jazz and the Experiences That Prepare Preservice Music Teachers to Effectively Do So. An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Studies Method.

In order to ensure ongoing excellence in graduate education at IC, I have asked Rob Gearhart, Associate Dean of GPS to chair an ad hoc committee that will make recommendations regarding the decentralization of graduate program administration. Such decentralization will give more authority and responsibility to individual program directors and their respective school deans while simultaneously allowing us to refocus the mission of GPS in support of innovative programs, alternative delivery methods, certificates, and other similar initiatives.
