Asma Barlas, professor of Politics and director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity, was invited to give a talk on her work on Muslim women on October 30th as part of the celebration of Islamic History Month in Canada.  The talk was organized by the Ottawa Muslim Women's Organization and held at the Public Library of Ottawa.

WICB-FM won a national award for Best Sports Play-By-Play from College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI) at the National Student Media Convention in Louisville, KY on October 29.

Elisabeth Nonas recently visited Firaxis Games, makers of Sid Meier's Civilization series, and taught a workshop on writing dialogue. While there, she visited with designer/writer (and CPMA '06) alum Liam Collins, executive producer Barry Caudill, and spoke with other writers/designers.

Nonas is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Cinema, Photography and Media Arts.

 

November 2nd began our annual collection of non-perishable food items for the Thanksgiving holiday, with bins located at various locations around campus. Patricia Zimmermann was the invited closing roundtable speaker at the Global Aesthetics: Intersecting Culture, Theory, Practice symposium at the Society for the Humanities at Cornell University, October 15-16, 2010.

Zimmermann's talk and summary of conference proceedings was entitled "Global Flows and Errant Turbulences in Arts and New Media Monsoons."

I am happy to inform the campus community that Orlando-Marquez Kittrell has been appointed Director of the Office of State Grants (CSTEP and HEOP).  This assignment is effective November 1, 2010.  Prior to this appointment Orlando served in the capacity of Interim Director of the same area.  Please join me in congratulating Orlando and wishing him the best in his new expanded role.

Ithaca College will hold an educational forum on the highly complex and controversial issue of hydraulic fracturing (also known as "fracking") on Wednesday, November 3rd, starting at 6:30PM in the Emerson Suites in the Campus Center. Some geologists estimate that there is enough natural gas locked into dense rock deep beneath Pennsylvania and New York to meet our energy needs for many years. But freeing that natural gas requires a drilling and extraction process called hydraulic fracturing that uses large amounts of water mixed with chemicals that some fear could pollute water above and below ground and deplete aquifers. Come learn about the different perspectives and concerns involved in this issue.
