The Ithacan has been named a Pacemaker finalist and the Ithacan Online has been named an Online Pacemaker finalist for 2008 by the Associated Collegiate Press.

The winners of the award -- widely regarded as the "Pulitzer Prize of collegiate journalism" -- will be announced at the ACP/CMA National College Media Convention in Kansas City on October 31.

A $500 prize is awarded each semester by the Premed Committee. The award is to be used for assistance with preparation for the required standardized exams associated with admittance to graduate health programs such as the MCAT, DAT, OAT, or GRE.

A celebration of the life and legacy of dean Larry Metzger will be held on Friday, September 26, at 4:00 p.m. in Ford Hall of the Whalen Music Center. Members of the Ithaca College community are invited to attend this event to honor Larry through words and music. The celebration, which is hosted by the Office of the Provost, will conclude with a reception in the McHenry Lobby.

Several occupational therapy (OT) faculty members and students have had presentations accepted for the annual meeting of NYSOTA, the state's OT association, which will take place September 18-20 in Syracuse. Most of these presentations are the results or joint faculty-student work in research and community outreach.

Among the faculty presenters are associate professor Carole Dennis, chair of the OT department; associate professor Mindy Cozzolino, who is also chair of the graduate studies program; and assistant professor Julie Dorsey.

Dennis Charsky, assistant professor in the Department of Strategic Communication, was an invited speaker at the "Games in Education" symposium on August 18-19. Dennis gave a presentation, entitled "A Framework of Integrating Games into the Classroom," and was part of a panel discussion, "Learning Outcomes with Games."

The Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Jeffery Meyer, begins the concert season early this year with two masterworks by Beethoven and Brahms on Saturday, September 20, at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall. The concert will be free and open to the public.

Beethoven's "Leonore Overture Number 3," with its famous offstage trumpet calls, and Brahms' third symphony comprise the program.

Several Ithaca College School of Music faculty members will join forces for a free recital featuring music of J.S. Bach on Friday, September 19, at 7:00 p.m. in Ford Hall. Works for solo organ will feature organist Jean Radice, and two cantatas will include soprano Deborah Montgomery, trumpeter Kim Dunnick, baritone Randie Blooding, and oboist Paige Morgan. A chamber orchestra will be conducted by graduate student Kevin Ryan.
