Because of the severe weather predicted to continue throughout the day, Ithaca College is closed and classes are cancelled for Wednesday, February 14, 2007. Essential personnel should report to work.

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an incident of a firearm being discharged at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, in the 100 block of Kendall Avenue in Ithaca.

African Art talk and lunch

On Monday, February 19th curator Nancy Maas will speak about the exhibition African Art From the Permanent Collection currently on display in the Handwerker Gallery Rotunda. The talk will begin in the Gallery at 12.15 p.m. A catered lunch-time reception will follow. This event is free and open to teh public. On February 15th IC's own Evan Williams will perform with his band together with Stanley and the Livingstons. The show begins at 6.30 p.m., and is free and open to the public. For further information contact Kalia Armbruster at karmbru1@ithaca.edu.

Ithaca College will celebrate Black History Month on Saturday, Feb. 17, with a free concert featuring a host of singers and other performers. The event will begin at 7 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

Eugene Rousseau, one of the most revered classical saxophonists in the world, will give a free recital at Ithaca College on Sunday, Feb. 18. Timothy Lovelace will collaborate on piano and Steven Mauk will assist on tenor saxophone. Beginning at 4 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music, the performance will include the “Rapsodie” by Debussy, a solo work by Frederick Fox, the sonata for alto saxophone and piano by Czech composer Jindrich Feld, and a trio by Jean-Baptiste Loeillet, which will feature Ithaca College professor Steven Mauk playing tenor saxophone.

Is all matter in the universe actually composed of inconceivabley tiny filiments of vibrating energy? One of the most exciting scientific adventures of all time is the search for the ultimate nature of physical reality, a hunt that in the past century has yielded relativity and quantum mechanics, two theories that radically altered our picture of space, time, gravity, and the fundamental building blocks of matter. The latest theory in that venture is called Superstring Theory - and it seeks to resolve some of the surprising discrepancies between relativity and quantum mechanics.
