The Ithaca College Board of Trustees will hold its first meeting of the 2006–7 academic year Wednesday–Friday, October 11–13. The meeting will include five new members elected within the past year and will be the first since 2001 without William Haines at the helm. After reaching the five-year maximum for serving as board chair, Haines has been elected chair emeritus.

The Department of Physics will open its new Performance-Based Physics Laboratory on Friday, Oct. 13. The event will begin at 3:30 p.m. in room 208 in the Center for Natural Sciences. Housing 11 round tables each equipped with audio, data, electrical outlets and Mac Powerbooks, the new facility allows students to create their own learning communities for three- to nine-person teams.

The inauguration of the new classroom will feature remarks by Howard Erlich, dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences, and a demonstration of the new facility’s technology by assistant professor of physics Michael “Bodhi” Rogers. In addition, Eric Leibensperger ’05 will give a talk, “Atmospheric Physics and Global Warming,” which focuses on his current research at Harvard University.

Matt Podolsky (Env. Studies and Cinema and Photography) presented "Shrubland Habitat Restoration in Contiguous Forest: Win-Win Management for Biodiversity" at the Annual Meeting of the New York State Ornithological Association. The conference was held in Oneonta, NY in September.

The paper was a co-authored with Dr. John Confer (Bio), and Juliana Quant (Bio.).

Matt received a $350 scholarship from the NYSOA for attending the conference and presenting the paper.

John Confer presented "Managing Habitat for Shrubland Birds" at a conference on "Early Successional Habitat" sponsored by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at the Rensselaerville Environmental Institute in September.

Composer and percussionist Warren Benson was a faculty member in the School of Music from 1953 to 1967 and made a huge difference in many IC students' lives. He also wrote the music for the College's original alma mater, the "Ithaca College Anthem." He passed away in October 2005. To honor him, his former student, acclaimed composer Persis Parshall Vehar '59, wrote "Kaddish (In Memoriam – Warren Benson).”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, for Ellis L. Phillips Jr., the fifth president of Ithaca College. The services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ, 496 Main Street, Medfield, MA.
