In addressing some 1,380 graduates and their guests at Ithaca College’s 111th commencement, Bill Bradley—a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame and former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate—recalled going up against the Soviet Union in the finals of the 1964 Olympic games. Before taking the court, Bradley had learned a Russian phrase he knew would come in handy should the Soviets try to intimidate him. After a particularly rough exchange of elbows, Bradley pulled out his newly learned idiom, much to his opponents’ dismay.

On May 22, the first day of the Summer Institute, there will be two viewings of the PBS documentary "Declining by Degrees" followed by discussion. One is from 9:00 a.m. to noon and the other from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the Clark Lounge of the Campus Center. Provost Peter Bardaglio will participate in the afternoon discussion.

Andrew Darby, Web Services Librarian, has published an article titled, "Implementing an Open Source Application in a College Library" in the latest issue of COLLEGE & UNDERGRADUATE LIBRARIES.

The search committee for the Associate Vice President for Human Resources is pleased to announce that the first candidate, Ms. Edna Chun, currently the Assistant Vice President for HR and Chief Affirmative Action officer at SUNY Geneseo, will be on campus for a series of interviews on May 18-19. June 1, 2006, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.: The Diversity Consortium of Tompkins County will host the Diversity Consortium Roundtable at the Hilton Garden Inn in Ithaca, New York.

This roundtable event will include discussions about the diversity issues affecting small communities, a panel discussion with community leaders who are currently leading successful diversity efforts, promoting diversity within our schools, and the effects of media on inclusion in the community.

Dale Hudson, assistant professor in the Cinema and Photography department, published an article titled, "'Just Play Yourself, "Maggie Cheung"': Irma Vep, Rethinking Transnational Stardom and Unthinking National Cinemas" in the summer issue of the international film journal SCREEN.

Andrew Smith co-edited the book "Biological Adhesives", with James Callow of the University of Birmingham, England.


Many plants, animals, and microbes use adhesive polymers and structures to attach to inert substrates, to each other, or to other organisms. This is the first major review that brings together research on many of
the well-known biological adhesives. Emphasizing the diversity of biological adhesives and associated adhesion processes, it deals with bacteria, fungi, algae, and marine and terrestrial animals. It bridges a variety of disciplines including biochemistry, molecular biology, biomechanics, bioengineering, microbiology, organism structure and function, and ultrastructure. As we learn more about the molecular and mechanical properties of these adhesives, we begin to understand why they adhere so well and how they develop cohesive strength. With this understanding comes the prospect of developing synthetic or semi-synthetic adhesives with broad applications in areas such as medicine, dentistry, and biotechnology.

Ithaca College anthropology freshman Melendy Krantz has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship at the Bangla Summer Institute in Banglades. The program, which is administered through Council of American Overseas Research Centers, is intended to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. The program provides funding for U.S. citizen undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. students to participate in beginning, intermediate and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers that are affiliated with the Fulbright program.
