The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Latin American Studies Program at Ithaca College are co-sponsoring a free screening of the film "Polvo" (Guatemala, 2012) on Tuesday Nov. 3rd at 4pm in Friends 308. This film is part of the LAS series on Central America. Feel free to join us and please spread the word.

Synopsis: "Juan is obsessed by the death of his father, who was “disappeared” by the Guatemalan military during the country’s civil war. He knows who his father’s informant was, and engages in petty acts of revenge against this man. When a filmmaker arrives in the village to make a documentary about the search for remains of the disappeared, Juan and his mother Delfina are given a chance at achieving some sort of resolution, in this sometimes painful, yet tender testament to the act of not forgetting." With Halloween coming up on Saturday, Ithaca College would like to remind students—and all members of the campus community—to celebrate both safely and respectfully.

If you are planning to “dress up” for the occasion, we ask that you consider the impact your costume could have on your fellow community members. Costumes that perpetuate negative stereotypes of groups or cultures are offensive and hurtful to others. Please be thoughtful and considerate as you enjoy your Halloween celebrations.

In 2006 in a gay-friendly neighborhood in New York City, a group of African-American lesbians were violently threatened by a man on the street. After fighting back, the women were charged with gang assault and attempted murder. Three pleaded guilty to avoid a trial, but the remaining four claimed self-defense and maintained their innocence. The documentary “Out in the Night” tells the story of these women, who the tabloids first dubbed the “Killer Lesbians” and who later became known as the “New Jersey Four.” The Out of the Closet and Onto the Screen series will host a free public showing of the film on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in Textor 101.
