Skott Freedman, assistant professor in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, published a research study titled "The influence of neighborhood density on word learning" in issue 9 of The Linguistics Journal.

Abstract:
Previous studies exploring the role of neighborhood density (ND) in word learning have been predominantly conducted as co-investigations with phonotactic probability (PP), and typically only with children. In order to more clearly delineate whether lexical competition or facilitation operates during word acquisition across development, the sole influence of ND on word learning was examined for children and adults using the same task. Thirty-nine typically-developing children and 46 typical adults were presented with a narrative containing eight nonwords which varied in ND, but were controlled for PP.

Hey all, and welcome back to IC for a new semester. I'm writing to share an opportunity for members of the Ithaca College LGBTQA and allied community. I'm the facilitator of ZAP panels this semester-- ZAP panels are LGBTQA and allied "talking panels;" essentially, we are invited into classrooms around campus and we share our stories. Professors typically invite us to their classes to expand upon their discussion of LGBTQA diversity themes-- they always turn out to be enriching experiences for both us as panelists and the class! With all of this said, I'm looking for more people to participate in panels! If you'd like to participate, or have questions, please feel free to contact me (Matt Dankanich) at mdankan1@ithaca.edu. Thanks!

"This is a dangerous person," wrote Norman Solomon recently after visiting WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in exile at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London," in words and deeds -- dangerous to the overlapping agendas of large corporations and governments in service to each other, dangerous to those who constantly make a killing from war, vast inequities and plunder of the planet."

Solomon will discuss Assange, Chelsea Manning, Jeffrey Sterling, and other whistleblowers as well as show clips and discuss the subjects in War Made Easy, the film made from his book of the same name, on Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, 7 PM in Center for Natural Sciences 115.

Submitted on behalf of Benjamin (Ben) Rifkin, Provost/VPEA

With the departure of former Dean of H&S Leslie Lewis for the position of Provost at Goucher College, Ithaca College is embarking on a search for a new dean of the School of Humanities and Sciences.  H&S faculty and staff were asked to self-nominate to serve on the search committee; the Student Government was asked to give the names of three students one of whom would be asked to serve on the committee, as well.  The Provost, in consultation with the President, worked to assemble a search committee consisting of diverse individuals representing the different disciplinary areas of the School of Humanities and Sciences.

Dr. Diane Gayeski, Dean of the Park School of Communications, graciously agreed to chair the committee.  AGB Search was selected to provide search and consulting services for this search and Ms. Julie Tea has been appointed as the AGB consultant working Ithaca College on this search.
