IC 3D Archaeology Visualization Laboratory conducts preliminary laser scans of the Ulysses S. McGregor (just north of Saratoga Springs, NY) to conduct preliminary scans of the location where President Grant finished his memoirs and passed away from throat cancer. Dr. Derrick Fox leads professional development workshopsContributed by Derrick Fox on 08/12/15 Dr. Derrick Fox, Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education/Conducting led teachers from around the country in professional development sessions focused on teaching in the middle school/junior high choral classroom. Hosted this past July by the Michigan State University School of Music in East, Lansing, MI., workshop topics included assessment, rehearsal planning and technology. Dr. Fox will also lead junior high and high school choral directors in the Orange County Public School System of Orlando, Florida in similar sessions this August. Particular focus will be given to assessment and technology, as they adopt a one-to-one technology plan. Athletic Training & Speech Language & Audiology Professors Garner Media Attention for Interprofessional Case on Vocal Cord Dysfunction in AthleteContributed by Paul Geisler on 08/12/15 NCC News (Newhouse Communications Center, Syracuse University) recently ran a story about a fascinating case involving an IC athlete with vocal cord dysfunction that was conducted by 2 IC Clinical Faculty members, Clinical Associate Professor of Athletic Training & Head Athletic Trainer, Mike Matheny, MS, ATC, and Clinical Assistant Professor of Speech Pathology & Clinic Director Mary Pitti, MS, CCC-SLP. The case is a result of an exciting and informative interprofessional collaboration between the Department of Exercise & Sport Sciences and the Department of Speech Language-Pathology and Audiology in the School of Health Sciences & Human Performance, and has lead to several forthcoming publications by the 2 professors. (72 words) Phoebe Constantinou publishes article in Strategies, Journal for Physical and Sport EducatorsContributed by Matt Morgan on 08/11/15 Phoebe Constantinou, associate professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education, recently published an article entitled, "Academic Language in Physical Education" in the peer-reviewed journal, Strategies, Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, (volume 28, number 3, pages 9-17). The article focuses on defining academic language in physical education and provides a step-by-step approach designed to help preservice and inservice teachers understand and incorporate academic language into their lesson planning. It provides examples of discipline-specific vocabulary, language functions, syntax, and discourse, aiming to clarify ambiguities surrounding language demands as they relate to the field of physical education. Furthermore, teaching strategies and assessment tools that enhance and measure academic language skills are discussed and presented.
