Faculty Council is seeking to fill two All-College positions on APC.  Both positions require the candidate to be tenured. The APC Policy subcommittee position is a one-year term while the APC Curriculum subcommittee position is a two-year term. Full APC meetings are one Friday per month from 3-5 PM. The subcommittees require one additional meeting per month.

Please send a statement of interest to rothbart@ithaca.edu and indicate which position you are interested in.

Deadline is Friday, September 13 at 4 PM.

The first Faculty Council sponsored Town Hall meeting will be on Tuesday, September 10 at 12:10 in Textor 102.  This meeting is intended to be an open forum for faculty from all of the schools to share thoughts and ideas of mutual concern and interest. No minutes will be taken, no reporters will be present. Staff members, and administrators holding faculty appointments are requested to refrain from attending.

Future Town Hall meetings will be on Thursday, October 31, at 12:10 in Textor 102 and next semester on Thursday, February 13 at 12:10 in Textor 102.

MegsRadio is a new ad-free, non-profit, personalized Internet radio system that is currently being developed at Ithaca College.  A prototype can be found at:

Our primary goal is to promote the work of local Ithaca-area artists by contextualizing their music with songs by more well-known artists.

Our second goal is provide users with an amazing music listening experience. This is done by giving our users more control over their stream of music through novel interactive design features. We also utilize the data that we collect from our users as feedback for our intelligent playlist algorithms.

Event to begin with a faculty performance of the original Nicholas Walker composition "Summer Thing"

On Wednesday, Sept. 4, Dean Karl Paulnack will lead the School of Music Convocation with a discussion titled "Bridges and Barriers," exploring the bridges--and the barriers--that we build in order to carry music in the world.  Intended for all Music majors, but open to the entire campus community, Convocation will begin at 10 a.m. in Ford Hall, within the Whalen Center for Music.

Meet Me at Equality: The People’s March on Washington, a documentary by James A. Rada, associate professor in the Department of Journalism, will screen on Thursday, September 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Park Hall Auditorium. The hour-long program profiles 28 people who participated in The March on Washington on August 28, 1963.

Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion with Rada and a group of Park School student journalists who partnered with NBC Nightly News and PBS Newshour online to cover the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington.

Prof. Rada’s documentary was picked up by several PBS affiliates nationwide, and will be broadcast this week to coincide with the anniversary. It will also be available on the PBS website.

Please join me on Thursday, September 12th for the first Faculty Colloquium of the academic year.  James Pfrehm, Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, will be presenting Technolingualism:  Language and Technology in Dialogue…….“Since the early day of our species, technology and language have evolved in parallel. Innovations in tool making were a catalyst for more complex, systematic means of communication. Similarly, these physical innovations—in addition to other sophisticated cultural practices—presuppose complex, systematic means of communication.  Regardless of which came first—the ‘cognitive technology’ of language or the physical technologies of culture—this was the beginning of “technolingualism,” the ‘inter-language’ that emerges out of the timeless dialogue between language and technology.”

The All-College Review Board for Human Subjects Research (HSR) Committee welcomes new Board members Bhavani Arabandi, Brandy Bessette-Symons, Sue-Je Gage, William Ryan, and Alison Shields, as well as our new community Board member Cynthia Massicci from Longview.  I would also like to congratulate Melinda Cozzolino who was appointed HSR Chair for AY2013-2014. 

HSR is responsible for reviewing all College research and teaching activities conducted by faculty, staff, and students that involve the use of human subjects.
