Joseph Murtagh, Writing, won the Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize from the Missouri Review, in the category of nonfiction, for an essay he wrote entitled "A Hive of Mysterious Danger." The essay recounts his experience as an instructor at Auburn Correctional Facility, a maximum security prison about an hour's drive north of Ithaca. The reward for the prize is publication in the spring issue of the Missouri Review, $5000, and a public reading in Columbia, Missouri in March.

(144 words) Seminar on newly discovered retrovirus, XMRV, in chronic fatigue syndrome patientsContributed by Jackie Wandell on 01/29/10 XMRV was recently reported in October, 2009 in the journal Science that suggests a viral etiology for chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS). CFS is characterized, most notably, by prolonged fatigue or post-exertional malaise following normal, non-stressful levels of physical activity that are typical of activities of daily living (ADL). Often those with CFS are unable to maintain a normal lifestyle, including regular employment, due to excessive recovery time associated with ADLs. The discovery of XMRV by Judy Mikovits and her colleagues at the Whittemore Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease in Reno, NV holds promise for improved treatment strategies for these patients. When temperatures drop below freezing, walking from parking lots and building to building can be dangerous. Though Maintenance and Facilities do an excellent job salting and shoveling campus walkways, black ice and icy patches can strike before getting attended to. Slips and falls are the number one cause of accidents at Ithaca College. (304 words) REDWING: VOICES FROM 1888 film showing on Wednesday, Feb.3Contributed by Lynn Hyde on 01/29/10 On Wednesday, Feb. 3, 7-8:30 p.m., in the Longview Auditorium (Bella Vista Drive), there will be a showing of the film made of Kennesaw University's 2009 fully staged production of Writing professor Dr. Katharyn Howd Machan's poetic monologues, REDWING: VOICES FROM 1888, directed by Dr. John S. Gentile, with a cast of eight actors performing 56 characters. This event sponsored by the Gerontology Institute is open to the whole Ithaca College community. Nick Kowalczyk, Writing, was featured on WSKU radio in Ohio.Contributed by Lynn Hyde on 01/29/10 Nick Kowalczyk, assistant professor in the Department of Writing, was featured in a story that aired on WSKU radio in Ohio on January 20, 2009, about President Barack Obama's Jan. 22 visit to Kowalczyk's struggling hometown of Lorain, Ohio.
