Spit That! and Students Active For Ending Rape presents "Survivor Spoken Mic." This will be a safe space for survivors, allies, and the IC community to speak and listen.

Our goal is to encourage those who have survived any ordeal to share their experiences and words of inspiration to others , as well as encourage allies and anyone who wants to speak out about violence. We hope that this event will bring solidarity on this campus.

Take Back The Night is an international march and rally to end violence against women and children. Come march on the commons with us in this most empowering event!

We will converge with Cornell University and community marches on the Ithaca Commons downtown for a rally and vigil. There will be speakers and an opportunity for anyone to sign up and speak. Support survivors!

Genocide Watch: Burma

On Monday April 20th Ithaca college's chapter of STAND:The National Student Anti-Genocide Coalition will be hosting Burmese refugee Aung Kyan Myint, a survivor and activist of the recent humanitarian conflict in Burma, and Jeff Hellman '07 spokesperson for the International Campaign for Freedom of Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma, and Co-Director/Co-Producer of the documentary on the Burmese crisis "Across the Sky: Honoring Home."  The speakers will focus on education, and advocacy for the humanitarian crisis in Burma. 

The event will be in Textor 101 at 7pm.  The event is free and open to the public.

Last fall, President Tom Rochon identified a challenge for all supervisors and staff members to sit down together and have a goal-setting conversation by October 31, 2008. You met that challenge!  Conversations were held, goals were set, and over 300 employees attended the workshop, "On Your Mark, Get Set … Set Your Goals!"

Part two of our challenge is to make these conversations a habit, and to assess goal progress and performance by May 31, 2009.

Free tickets for the inauguration of Ithaca College's eighth president -- Thomas R. Rochon -- are still available! The ceremony starts at 3:00 p.m. on Friday in the Ben Light Gymnasium.

Tickets can be picked up Monday-Friday, noon to 6:00 p.m., at the recreation center on the ground floor of Campus Center. You can also pick up tickets at offices of vice presidents and deans. OR, if you can't decide until the last minute -- pick one up at the door on Friday before 2:45 p.m.

Susan Perlstein, a noted expert in the field of creativity and aging, will speak on that topic this Friday morning, April 17, at 11:15 a.m. in Park Hall Auditorium.

Ms. Perlstein's presentation is part of two days of academic and celebratory events around the inauguration of Ithaca College's eighth president, Thomas R. Rochon. Her talk is free and open to the public.

Political scientist Robert D. Putnam will be awarded an honorary doctor of letters degree by Ithaca College. The degree presentation will take place on Friday, April 17, during the inauguration of Ithaca College President Thomas R. Rochon. Putnam will present an address, "A New 'Greatest Generation'?" as part of the inaugural ceremony.

Putnam is the Peter and Isabel Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. He is best known for his work on how an active community contributes to the welfare of society. His research shows that regions with strong civic engagement -- also called social capital -- enjoy better educational performance, reduced levels of crime and suicide, longer lives and better health, greater economic productivity, higher voter turnout, and more democratic and effective government.

Cole Louison '00 will give a talk, entitled "A Writer's Life: The Path of a Newspaper, Public Radio, and Magazine Reporter," on Monday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. in Textor 102. Louison is a writer for GQ magazine and contributes to Fader, McSweeney's, the New York Times, Buzzsaw, All Things Considered, and others.

The lecture is part of the Park School Writing Award Speaker Series. Past speakers have included travel writer Susan Orlean and Rick Frishman, author, publisher, and public relations practitioner.

Guitarist Manuel Barrueco and the string quartet Cuarteto Latinoamericano will give this year’s performance in the annual Shirley and Chas Hockett Chamber Music Concert Series at Ithaca College. The program includes works by tango composer Astor Piazzolla and the world premiere of “Boliviana” by Miguel de Aguila.

The free concert will take place on Friday, April 17, at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Named after two longtime educators, the series honors the Hocketts' love of music and devotion to Ithaca College and its School of Music.
