An exciting new project has emerged from the Gerontology Institute. Working with director John Krout, professor Katharyn Howd Machan of the Department of Writing is currently coordinating a statewide poetry contest for high school students.

A seasonal favorite, the Winter Choral Collage at the Ithaca College School of Music will take place at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 7, in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. The free concert will feature the choir, chorus, women's chorale, and madrigals, led by Lawrence Doebler and Janet Galván.

The Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra, under Jeffery Meyer's direction, will present a free concert celebrating the birthdays of Olivier Messiaen and Elliot Carter on Saturday, December 6 at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall at Ithaca College.

Allen Yu, the winner of the High School Piano Competition, will be the featured soloist in the first movement of Mozart's Piano Concerto in A major, K. 488. The program will conclude with Tchaikovsky's fifth symphony.

The Ithaca College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Michael Titlebaum, will present a free concert featuring trumpet soloist John Sneider on Friday, December 5, at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall at Ithaca College. Music by Sneider, Titlebaum, Clare Fischer, Bill Holman, Tom Davis, and others is on the program.

Paula Crider -- who retired in 1999 from a distinguished 33-year career directing bands at the University of Texas -- will make two appearances at Ithaca College as the third Colonel Arnald Gabriel '50, HDRMU '89 Visiting Wind Conductor.

Crider will conduct the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble on Wednesday, December 3, and the concert and symphonic bands on Thursday, December 4. Free and open to the public, the performances will start at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

An online, interdisciplinary course about water is planned for the summer session in June 2009. Guest lecturers from varied disciplines will present their work in an online environment and respond to student questions.

The course modules will focus on three areas -- the humanities, sciences, and politics of water -- with an emphasis on current regional, national, and global water issues.
