Is all matter in the Universe actually composed of inconceivably tiny filaments of vibrating energy? One of the most exciting scientific adventures of all time is the search for the ultimate nature of physical reality, a hunt that in the past century has yielded relativity and quantum mechanics, two theories that radically altered our picture of space, time, gravity, and the fundamental building blocks of matter. The latest theory in that venture is called Superstring Theory - and it seeks to resolve some of the surprising discrepancies between relativity and quantum mechanics.

“Feel Your Boobies, Save Your Life”—that’s not a message Leigh Hurst expected to be spreading when she graduated from Ithaca College in 1992 with a degree in corporate communications. These days, though, after a high-powered career as a trainer—and a diagnosis of breast cancer at age 33—Hurst will return to her alma mater on Thursday, Feb. 22, to tell young women that detecting breast cancer early is the best way to survive the disease. And the best method of early detection for women under 40 is reflected in the title of Hurst’s talk:

It is a parent's worst nightmare. Tom and Doris Smeltzer's college-aged daughter, Andrea, didn't call on Father's Day. She had been uncharacteristically out of touch for several days.

Frantic calls to friends and college administrators led the police to search for Andrea. When they found her she had died in her sleep of bulimia.

Andrea Smeltzer was a talented, vibrant, creative and well loved young woman when she died at age 19 from bulimia.

Hear the story of Andrea's life, struggle with bulima, her early death, as told by her parents. Important information about eating disorders and resources for helping a friend or yourself will also be included.

Pianist Karl Lutchmayer will give a free faculty recital on Wednesday, February 21 at 7pm in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music at Ithaca College. His program will include music of Haydn, Liszt, the American premier of a piece by Humphrey Searle, and two works by Busoni.

Professor Denise A. Woods was not able to present her voice, speech, and dialects masterclass and her talk on "Color-Blind Speech" in the Clark Theatre because her flights from Los Angeles to Ithaca were canceled due to the weather. Professor Woods has indicated her interest in visiting our campus at another time. The new time, date, and place for her masterclass and talk will be announced in Intercom.

On Monday, February 19th curator Nancy Maas will speak about the exhibition African Art From the Permanent Collection currently on display in the Handwerker Gallery Rotunda. The talk will begin in the Gallery at 12.15 p.m. A catered lunch-time reception will follow. This event is free and open to the public.
