(107 words) Bursar's Benefit Auction: Silence is Golden...But Not For Long!Contributed by Anne Woodard on 03/21/06 Well, it is only a mere week until the Bursar's Benefit Auction, and a question seems to be politely circulating among friends. Just what IS a "silent auction?" Isn't the purpose of an auction to hoot and holler and make yourself known? A silent auction is an event where all the merchandise is beautifully displayed for your viewing pleasure. Beside each item is a bidding sheet, and hopeful bidders put their bidding number on the sheet along with their bid. Putting your first one on is the easy part...the tricky part is circling around like a buzzard, keeping an eye on your item while cleverly disguising the fact from your friends that YOU are that #24 who keeps increasing the bids! At noon the bidding will be over, and the last number and bid will be circled, making all that milling around a successful mission!
