Ithaca Athletics Now Accepting Applications for Internship Opportunities for Spring 2018Contributed by Justin Lutes on 10/24/17 ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College Department of Athletics is now accepting applications from IC students for the Spring 2018 semester who wish to obtain academic credits and work within athletics. Nov. 2nd 12:10 and 4 PM in Textor 101Contributed by James Pfrehm on 10/23/17 The National Conference for Undergraduate Research will take place this April 4-7, 2018 at the University of Central Oklahoma. http://www.cur.org/conferences_and_events/student_events/ncur_2018/ Students interested in participating in this year's NCUR are strongly encouraged to attend one of two informational meetings on Nov. 2nd (12:10 - 1 pm, or 4-5 pm) in Textor 101. Important note: Attendance to this year's NCUR will be capped at 20 students. As a result, we will be instituting a point-based selection process for attendees. (46 words) Yvonne Rogalski presented at the Association of Schools of Allied Health ProfessionsContributed by Yvonne Rogalski on 10/23/17 Yvonne Rogalski, faculty in the speech-language pathology and audiology department, presented a poster titled “Interprofessional education through a monthly stroke support group” at the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions in San Antonio Texas. Authors include Jill Mayer (PT dept), Sarah Fishel (PT dept), Jessica Valdez-Taves (OT dept), Yvonne Rogalski (SLPA dept), Jan Monroe (Rec & Leisure dept), and Laura Gras (PT dept). Findings indicate that student participation in a stroke support group increases their knowledge and awareness of other health professions and increases their understanding of the rehabilitation process and quality of life post-stroke. (209 words) Kristen Pompey and Yvonne Rogalski presented at the Association of Schools of Allied Health ProfessionsContributed by Yvonne Rogalski on 10/23/17 Kristen Pompey, a graduate student in the department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology (SLPA), presented her poster with Yvonne Rogalski (SLPA faculty) at the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions in San Antonio Texas. The title of the poster was "Confidence levels of future health professionals communicating with people with aphasia." Pompey’s research indicates that speech-language pathology students have greater confidence communicating with people with aphasia (an acquired language disorder) than their peers in occupational therapy and physical therapy. Pompey concluded that students should have more opportunities to communicate with people with aphasia while they are in school, as preparation for their careers in the health professions. The title of the poster was "Aphasia awareness and communication confidence at Ithaca College: A comparison between HSHP and non-HSHP schools." O'Brien's research indicates that students in HSHP have more awareness of and education about "aphasia" (an acquired language disorder) than non-HSHP schools. HSHP students also reported feeling more confident about interacting with people with aphasia.
