It’s Africa Week 2015, and IC African Students Association is in the middle of an amazing lineup of events to celebrate.  IC ASA is dedicated to spreading political, social, educational, cultural and media awareness about the continent of Africa.  On Monday, they hosted their inaugural speaker, Solome Lemma, a philanthropist, activist and organizer, who spoke about the ways in which we can engage and promote diverse, nuanced, and dignified narratives of the continent of Africa.  There are many other events taking place this week including a movie screening, a panel, and a fashion show.

This past weekend, 14 members of Ithaca College Humans vs. Zombies Social Club traveled to Pennsylvania State University to compete in the 6th annual Penn State Humans vs. Zombies Invitational.  The day was filled with 12 hours of blasting, tagging, and camaraderie.  On campus, this student organization promotes a week-long game each semester where "zombies" try to chase and tag "humans" who then try to fend off the "zombies" with Nerf blasters. The game only takes place outdoors.  If you are interested in getting involved with this exhilarating game or meeting other players in the area, join the Ithaca College Humans vs. Zombies Social Club group on Facebook.

On Friday, April 3, IC Women in Communications hosted IC’s first ever Dance-A-Thon in Emerson Suites.  Teams of 2-5 people signed up pledging to have at least 2 members out on the dance floor at all times during the three-hour event.  In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, all proceeds from the event were donated to The Advocacy Center, a local resource that has provided support, advocacy and education for survivors of domestic violence since 1977, survivors of child sexual abuse since 1982 and survivors of adult sexual assault since 2003.  IC Women in Communications is dedicated to addressing many other issues women face, especially within the context of the communications industry.  If you are interested, stop by one of their weekly meetings on Wednesday nights at 8:00 in Park 279.

Did you know that IC has an organic garden on campus?  Organic Growers of Ithaca College is a group of IC students interested in growing organic produce, and they are the student organization that takes care of this 3,600 square feet garden located down past the compost facility.  Ever since 2008, Organic Growers of Ithaca College has been using many sustainable farming techniques including permaculture design, crop rotation, companion planting, four-season food production, and heirloom seed saving.  This past week, the student organization hosted a talk with the owners of Plowbreak Farm, an organic farm owned and operated by two IC grads.

Student Volunteers for Special Olympics is a student organization made up of students volunteering their time to help individuals with a wide range of disabilities participate in competitive sports within the Ithaca Community to improve their quality of life.
This student organization was founded when president Katie Deitz was a freshman in 2011. When Katie went to a “Spread the Word to End the Word” campaign focused around ending stigmas and difficult dialogue surrounding those with disabilities, she knew she found something in which she was interested. When the student organization was formed, the members began attending sporting practices, acting as assistant coaches in a variety of different sports including basketball and swimming. Now, three years later, the club has grown and a family has been formed between the athletes and the volunteers.

Like any organization that deals with sensitive information, Ithaca College must be in compliance with a variety of security standards. To ensure this compliance, our security practices and policies are regularly reviewed by external auditors, and often result in recommended or mandated changes to our security practices. One such recommendation that the college as a whole has been asked to comply with is the enforcement of screen saver passwords on virtually all college-owned computers.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Catalog Description: Study of human development from infancy through adolescence, including cognitive and behavioral approaches to learning and fostering motivation in the context of school and other instructional situations. Attention given to the empirical attitude in relating theory and practice in various educational settings.

Course Goals and Purpose: Through lectures, hands-on activities, and discussions, this course focuses on basic research methods, the theory and application of behavioral, social and cognitive approaches to learning and fostering motivation in educational settings as well as the discussion of current issues in education.  The purposes of this course are to help you understand and translate psychological principles into practice and to provide you with the competencies required for teacher accreditation.
