Julia Lapp, Associate Professor in the Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education, presented at the European Institute of Food History and Food Studies in Tours, France in late March.

The presentation titled "From Schmierkase to Sustainability: New York State Cheese and the Artisanal Cheese Movement" is based on Lapp's current research about New York State cheese manufacture. In her research, Lapp explores the history of cheese making in NYS and interviews contemporary NYS cheese-makers about their work in relation to the development of the regional food system.

Beatriz Montilla (Spanish), Priscilla Lee (Film, Photography, & Visual Art), and Dr. Sherry Deckman (Education) recently presented a breakout session at the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s Alumni of Color Conference. The interactive session focused on cultivating cross-racial empathy in race-focused higher education classes and study abroad programs. Beatriz, Priscilla, and Sherry are currently in the process of preparing an article manuscript based on this work.

 

Peter Martin (Education) recently published his work “Contradictory Reforms: When NCLB Undermines Charter School Innovation” in the journal Current Issues in Education.  By examining how a particular public charter school was transformed in response to the need to improve student scores on state tests, the article discusses how the two most prominent current educational reform efforts act at cross-purposes. 

Jeffery Meyer, Director of Orchestras, conducts and teaches at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana and conducts the Erie All-Area Orchestra in Buffalo, New York.

Sorayya Khan is the author of two previous novels, Noor and Five Queen’s Road. Her work has appeared in several anthologies and literary reviews. She is the recipient of a Fulbright research award, a Malahat Review Novella Prize, and a Constance Saltonstall Artist Grant that took her to post-tsunami Banda Aceh. She lives in Ithaca,  New York.

This reading is programmed by Barbara Adams,  Associate Professor of Writing  at Ithaca College and FLEFF Literary Curator.

Laurel Kuxhaus, PhD, Assistant Professor the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering at Clarkson University, is presenting on “Biomechanical effects of rotational speed, joint angle, and muscle contraction on elbow stiffness”.  The talk is on Friday April 10th from 12:00 to 1:00 pm in Smiddy 325 and is free and open to the public.
