May Work/Life Line: Health BBQ

Contributed by Katie Sack on 05/01/14

The month of May means Memorial Day is coming, which marks the beginning of summer foods and cooking for most people. Barbequing is a popular part of summer meals, but it can wreak havoc on efforts towards healthy eating. • Instead of always grilling meat, use more heart-healthy fish such as salmon or trout
  • Substitute hamburgers with skinless chicken breast or turkey burgers
  • Use low-fat cheese on burgers and sandwiches, and choose rolls that are 100% whole grain
  • Burned meat can mean consuming carcinogens – avoid overcooking, be sure to clean off any old charred food before using your grill again, and marinate food before cooking to reduce the presence of carcinogenic materials
