In addition to making decisions on the 2014–15 budget and on faculty tenure/promotion cases, the Ithaca College Board of Trustees had the opportunity to continue discussions on the academic direction of the college, to hear from current students, and to meet with alumni and friends of the college during its recent meeting on the West Coast.

Dacia Maraini, a world-renowned novelist, journalist, playwright and activist, will give a lecture entitled "Saints and Rebels: Portraits of Women in History" at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 6, 2014, at the Handwerker Gallery. Maraini will talk about the representation of women in her plays and novels.

The lecture will be followed, at 6:00 p.m., also at the Handwerker Gallery, by the dramatic reading of Dacia Maraini's play, Charlotte Corday, translated by Marella Feltrin-Morris and adapted by Emily Jackson.

Los Angeles-based poet Will Alexander, whose work has been described as Afro-futurist or Afro-surrealist, will give a poetry reading that is free and open to the public on March 25th at 6:00 pm in the Handwerker Gallery. According to poet and critic Harryette Mullen, Will Alexander's "literary influences connect him to an international avant-garde, just as his experience as an African American connects him to a black diaspora, and to the political struggles of Third World people."

Take Academic Writing 10600 online this summer.  The asynchronous course will allow students to complete all assignments, class discussions, and drafts on their own time at their own pace on the course management system, Sakai. The site will provide students with video content, illustrating the concepts explored and expectations for each major assignment. Also, students will have the opportunity to engage in interactive discussions about the readings and student drafts. This 5-week course fulfills the standard requirement for Academic Writing 10600 and is equivalent to the traditional face-to-face version of the course. The online class begins May 27, 2014. Mary Ann Rishel, Professor Emerita, Writing, recently presented a paper on epistemology, language and humor at the International Society for Humor Studies Conference, College of William and Mary.  A second paper on teaching epistemologies with readings in the humanities was presented at the International Forum for University Teaching held at the Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
