IC has two Fulbright winners

Two Ithaca College students have been awarded Fulbright scholarships for study and teaching abroad, and another has been given alternate status.

The 16th-ranked Ithaca College women's track & field team will open competition at the three-day NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Claremont Mudd-Scripps, Thursday. The competition runs through Saturday.

The Campus Store will close at 1:00pm on Thursday May 24th for the Campus Carnival. The store will remain closed for the rest of the afternoon and will also be closed on Friday May 25th to conduct year end inventory. The Campus Store will reopen at 8:30am on Tuesday May 29th.

Asma Barlas, professor and director of the Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity, gave an invited keynote on "Islam, Feminism, and Secular Democracy: Uncrossed Bridges," at the Istanbul Seminars on May 21st.  The Seminars are organized yearly in Turkey by the Italian organization Reset Doc and Bilgi University, and this year's theme was "The Promises of Democracy."

Amy Kule, the 1987 history graduate who plans and produces the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, returned to her alma mater on Sunday, May 20, to give the college’s Commencement address. As Kule spoke, she was flanked by a pair of giant helium balloons from the parade, and as she concluded her address, the audience was showered with confetti. In between, Kule told the 1,360 graduates and their guests to take a deep breath, grasp the reins of their lives and find their passion.

The Mail Center and Phillips Hall Post Office will be closed on Thursday May 24th from 1-3pm.  Mail Service Staff will be attending the Campus Carnival.  There will not be an afternoon pick up on this day.  Additional mail will need to be brought to the Mail Center between 3 and 3:15pm if it needs to go out that day.

Wendy Fonder, Assessment & Programs Specialist in the School of Business, will be leaving the School of Business to accept a new position in the Center for Print Production in June 2012.

Wendy joined the School of Business in 1996 and has made substantial and lasting contributions to the School through her work with assessment, AACSB accreditation, and the MBA/PA programs. Thank you, Wendy, for your service and dedication to the Business School, and congratulations on your new position!

Thanks to Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick, city public works crews, and project contractors, Clinton Street will be open during Commencement weekend and it will not be necessary to detour around the construction project.

The Ithaca College Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased to announce that our nominee, Kaylee Underkofler (Biochemistry, `12) has been selected as a national Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship award winner and will receive $5,000 to support her pursuit of a PhD in Chemistry.  Kaylee plans on beginning her graduate work this fall at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a top ten program in her field.  Congratulations Kaylee!

Six members of the Ithaca Bach Ensemble performed their final concert of the year in Wellin Hall on the campus of Hamilton College on Saturday, April 28th.   Deborah Montgomery (soprano), David Parks (tenor), Wendy Herbener Mehne (flute), Nicholas DiEugenio (violin), Elizabeth Simkin (cello) and Jean Radice (harpsichord and organ) performed selections from J. S. Bach’s vast repertory, which included solo vocal arias, selections from the Musical Offering and Bach’s B minor flute sonata.

Rhoda Meador, Ph.D., director of the Ithaca College Gerontology Institute, has co-authored a chapter in the recently published book, Research for the Public Good: Applying the Methods of Translational Research to Improve Human Health and Well-Being / edited by E. Wethington and R.E. Dunifon, 1st ed. (APA Bronfenbrenner Series on the Ecology of Human Development, c 2012). Meador's former colleagues, Elaine Wethington and Karl Pillemer, are the other co-authors of Chapter 8, "Community-Researcher Partnerships in Aging: The Cornell Institute for Translational Research on Aging."
