Hillel Headlines

Havdalah Boat Cruise: Saturday September 4th

Have you ever done havdalah in the middle of a lake? Come and enjoy a relaxing evening on Cayuga Lake with Hillel! first we will do a havdalah service to end Shabbat, then eat and mingle until 10:30 while taking a mellow night cruise around the lake. Don't forget to bring warm clothes. It gets chilly on the boat.  Transportation will be provided to and from the cruise. Meet at the textor flag pole at 8:30 pm sharp. Please R.S.V.P A.SA.P to hillel@ithaca.edu. It is first come first serve for affiliates.  

Labor Day Gorge Hike: Monday September 6th

Celebrate Labor Day with Hillel by taking a scenic hike at Buttermilk Falls! Relax, meet other students in Hillel and enjoy the natural beauty of one of Ithaca's many incredible gorges. Hillel will leave from the textor flag pole at 1pm.

Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann, Assistant Professor of Music Composition is the recipient of a 2010-11 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.  According to the foundation, “The Fellowships are awarded to men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts." Grossmann’s compositions have been performed throughout the U.S., Latin America and Europe. Upcoming performances of his works include the Da Capo Chamber Players’ performance of Mecanismos at Merkin Hall, NYC in October among other performances in the U.S., Canada and at the Festival of Contemporary Music in Lima, Peru. In addition, Grossmann’s work Pensar Geométrico al Trasluz will be released in the forthcoming compact disc, áltaVoz: New Music from Latin America.

In February 2004, the mayor of San Francisco ordered city officials to allow lesbian and gay couples to get married. Pioneering activists Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, celebrating their 51st anniversary, had the privilege of being the first couple to tie the knot.

On Thursday. September 16, political cartoonist Tom Tomorrow will offer a visual presentation in Emerson Suites at 7:30 pm. Tom Tomorrow is the pen name of Dan Perkins – one of the most successful cartoonists in independent media. His award-winning weekly strip, “This Modern World,” skewers the powerful in media and politics; it appears in dozens of alternative weeklies nationwide, including the Ithaca Times.
