CCH Pounder — cofounder of Artists for a New South Africa and an actor with numerous film, television and theater credits, including the Na’vi spiritual leader Mo’at in “Avatar” — returned to IC on Sunday, May 23, as the guest speaker at her alma mater’s 115th commencement. Though her audience held some 1,300 new graduates and their guests, Pounder said she came back to the institution where she had earned a degree in theater arts because there was someone in the assembly she wanted to talk to.

David Lurvey ’13, a Film, Photography, and Visual Arts major, and Dylan Lowry ’13, a
Cinema and Photography major, recently won the $2500 Grand Prize in the Patheos Faith on Campus Video Contest.

Their film, Dharma in the Dorm, is about maintaining a practice/faith on a college campus. “After coming to college, a lot of people lose touch with their spiritual/religious communities and gradually stray away from their faith,” said Lowry, a practicing Buddhist. “I talk about the struggles of maintaining one's practice while at college, and touch on a few of the aspects of Buddhism that I benefit from in my academic life. “

Ms. Henderson was named Executive Director for People's Grocery in 2009. The People's Grocery is a food-justice organization that has been using education and direct distribution to encourage healthy eating in West Oakland since 2002.

Prior to joining People’s Grocery in 2009, Nikki worked with Green-for-All founder Van Jones to develop national programs for people of color in the environmental sector, and she has gained extensive exposure to the politics and dynamics of national food and farming movements through work with the President of Slow Food USA.

Associate Professor of Politics Chip Gagnon gave a talk entitled "What Can Missionary Work Tell Us About Democracy Promotion" at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade, Serbia, on May 20.
 

Holly Van Buren, administrative assistant at the Ithaca College James B. Pendleton Center in Los Angeles, recently received her Masters of Arts in Critical Studies of Film and Television from the University of Southern California, School of Cinematic Arts. The graduation ceremony was held on Friday, May 14 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Van Buren graduated from Ithaca College in 2006 with a Television-Radio major and Women's Studies minor.

 

 

 

Raised in small-town Illinois, cancer seems to run in Sandra Steingraber’s family. Sandra was diagnosed with bladder cancer when she was just twenty years old. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer when Sandra was in high school, and many of her aunts and uncles have struggled with the disease. One aunt even died from the same form of bladder cancer that Sandra had. But while cancer runs in her family, she cannot say that it runs in her genes. Sandra is adopted. This unusual twist led Sandra to ask what else families have in common besides their DNA. The answer is all around us: our environment.

Instructors teaching Spring 2011 classes with a community engagement component are invited to include, in the early weeks of the course, a set of learning experiences created and run by experienced IC faculty and community leaders as part of a pilot project funded by the Partnerships for Sustainability Education to help students develop cultural and community competency related to doing this kind of work.

Effective June 1, 2010 The Office of Disability Services, The Office of State Grants (HEOP and CSTEP); and the Office Academic Enrichment Services will operate as three independent operations, reporting directly to the Associate Provost for Academic Programs and Initiatives. The intent of this restructuring is to enable these offices to most effectively deliver important services to our students and is occurring after a careful, thoughtful and inclusive process.

Three finalists for the Assistant Director of Student Involvement position in the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs (OSEMA) will visit campus for interviews next week.

Members often think that if they choose a doctor in our network, any care that doctor provides is covered at the in-network rate. However, sometimes doctors perform outpatient procedures at facilities that are not in Aetna's network. This can mean members owe more money because of facility charges. 

Starting July 1, 2010, Aetna will require pre-authorization for out-of-network ambulatory surgical facilities.

 Faculty Council recently conducted a ballot on ICNL Committee's statement on "fracking".  Results  on the question "I support the ICNL Committee's statement on hydrofracturing" are 136 Yes, 11 No.

It is with a mixture of sadness (for us) and joy (for her new position) that I announce the leaving of Dr. Janet Wigglesworth, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Clinical Services in the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance.
