Course Description and Objectives:
The online course will be an overview of the relationship between cultural anthropology and film. We will watch a variety of films by ethnographic filmmakers and anthropologists, as well as “Hollywood” style documentary films that cover cultural representations and viewpoints to discuss how these two genres inform, converge and diverge from the groups represented. Discussion and critical analysis of the readings and films are an integral part of the course. This class will also address (a) what films show (and do not show); (b) how Western culture uses images of non-Western peoples; and (c) how non-Western peoples use images of themselves.& Read more . . .
