Lis Maurer, LGBT Education, Outreach, and Services Program Director, and Rebecca Plante, Associate Professor of Sociology will discuss their new book, Doing Gender Diversity: Readings in Theory and Real-World Experience. Belisa Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of Sociology, will also read from her chapter, “Can’t We All Just Move Beyond? Everyday Manifestations of the Black-White Binary.” The event is from 6 - 7 p.m. Friday, October 23, at "Buffalo Street Books" in the DeWitt Mall, 215 N. Cayuga St, Ithaca. On Friday, October 23, join hundreds of other members of the IC community in a "ghost walk" to observe the International Day of Climate Action. We need 350 students, faculty and staff to dress up in ghost costumes with the bottom dyed blue to symbolize the potentially fatal problem of climate change and the rising sea levels it causes. The "ghost walkers" will assemble to take a picture in the shape of “350”, then conduct a parade around campus.

The seventh annual Veterans Day Celebration will be held at noon on Tuesday, November 10th in Ford Auditorium in the Whalen Center for Music. Members of the Ithaca College community are encouraged to join in the college’s salute to those who serve.

Don Beachler, Politics Department, has co-authored (with Kevin McMahon of Trinity College, David Rankin of SUNY-Fredonia and John K. White of Catholic University of America) a book on the 2008 presidential election.  Winning the White House 2008 was published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2009.

ShortLine/Coach USA is offering an express charter bus to the Boston area for Thanksgiving break.

This bus will leave from the parking lot by the Park School at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, November 20, and will return Sunday, November 29, at approximately 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, October 24th between 9:00AM and 2:30PM a series of lectures will address current neurobiological theories of autism, genetics, medication, family dynamics, and current autism services in Central New York. The lectures will be addressed to people with autism spectrum conditions, their parents, educators, students, and other caregivers. The presentations will be held at Cornell University in Room 218 Robert Purcell Union. Presenters include Dr. Hudenko (Ithaca College, Psychology),  Dr. Belmonte (Cornell, Human Ecology), Dr. Fried (Franziska Racker Centers), Dr. Anagnostou (University of Toronto, Department of Pediatrics), and Dr. Persico (Rome's Università Campus Bio-Medico, Physiology). Registration is free but seats are limited.  For lecture information and to register go to:  http://www.AutismCollaborative.org/register/

There are 27 million slaves in the world today. People forced to work without pay, under threat of violence and unable to walk away.

Sometimes the slave holder ‘pays’ a few grains of rice to keep the slaves alive, or uses a bogus payment that the slave holder reclaims at the end of the month.

But the end result is what slavery is today and has always been—one person controlling another and then forcing them to work. As big and ugly as it is, we can end slavery.

Bass trombonist Jeffrey Gray will give a free recital on Thursday, October 22 at 7 pm in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J.
