John Confer, associate professor of biology, presented an invited seminar in April entitled, "Disturbing Forest and Field to Maximize Biodiversity: From Micro-Disturbance for Ceruleans to Mega-Disturbance for Golden-wings" at the Biodiversity Research Institute Seminar Series at the New York State Museum in Albany.

The Ithaca College Symphony Orchestras will present the final concert of their 2006-07 season on Wednesday, April 25. The free concert begins at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall, and is conducted by Jeffery Meyer. The program will open with a recent work by Chen Yi “Ge Xu (Antiphony),” and continue with Penderecki’s powerful “Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima.” Jia Li Yang, who won the annual High School Piano Competition, will solo with the orchestra on the first movement of Beethoven’s third piano concerto. The concert will conclude with the towering second symphony by Jean Sibelius.

The Concert Band under Mark Fonder’s baton will present a concert entitled “The Sun, Moon, and Stars” on Thursday, April 26 at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Following the theme of the “Sun, Moon, and Stars,” the band will play music of Sousa, Larsen, Maslanka, Sparke, and Gillingham.

Associate professor Raj Subramaniam, Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education, recently published a research article, "Middle School Students' Attitudes Toward Physical Education," in the international journal Teaching and Teacher Education (23) 602-611.

As a reminder, tickets for the 2nd annual Empty Bowls program are on sale in the Textor Lobby from 11am to 1pm Thursday or at the door to the event on Friday.

The event is being held from 12-2pm in the Emerson Suites as part of the Celebration of Service. Tickets are $10 for lunch only or $20 for lunch and a handmade ceramic bowl of your choice.

The Evan D. Williams Band will be performing throughout the luncheon and a special video produced by the first-year leadership scholars that takes a look at Poverty from the college student perspective will be shown.

Lunch will consist of soups, breads, salads, and a special dessert donated by the Culinary Arts Club. Lunch itself is being donated by Sodexho-Dining Services.

The Virginia Tech Alumni Association is asking for national participation in the Orange and Maroon Effect. They are requesting that everyone in the U.S. support the VT campus community by wearing orange and maroon on Friday April 20, 2007. A candlelight vigil will be held on Thursday, April 19, at 8:00 p.m. in Muller Chapel in support of the victims and survivors of the Virginia Tech shootings. Assistant professor Alan Gomez, of the Center for the Study of Race, Culture, and Ethnicity (CSCRE), made several presentations recently, including at a conference on race, punishment, and citizenship in California at San Jose State University (April); a lecture on "Civil Rights: Globalization, Labor, and Dignity," at Cornell (March); a talk on planning torture/resisting living death, also at Cornell (February); a lecture entitled, "From Below and to the Left: The Circulation of U.S. Third World Political Cultures," at the University of Houston; and a roundtable presentation at the American History Association in Georgia (January).

It is that time of year again when picnics, receptions and banquets are held to celebrate the completion of the academic year, students’ accomplishments, and Commencement.
