Due to the increase in transportation costs, REMP is asking that individual laser cartridges be recycled using the pre-paid shipping label that accompanies the installation instruction in the box with each new replacement cartridge. If a return label does not accompany a cartridge, the cartridge should be disposed of in the trash.

Karen Allaben-Confer (’69) and John Confer presented at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster, MA.

“The Art of Birds-from Terns to Petrels and Puffins” (Karen)

Karen, noted seabird artist, offered a look inside the creative sole of a bird artist who loves the sea and seabirds, and believes that science and art are fraternal. Karen was the winner of the George Miksch Sutton Award for Ornitholgical Art!

“The Removal of Science form Public Decisions: A Discussion about Global Warming & Evolution” (John)

For over three decades John has studied the ecology and life history of Golden-winged and Blue-winger Warblers, examing factors that influence nesting success. Much of his research is concerned with the regulation of species diversity and abundance, man's impact on our natural ecosystem. John's exceptional background in environmental impact on bird habitats and behaviors enriches his perspective on the timely subject of global warming.

Maria DiFrancesco recently published "Sisterhood and
Violence in Cristina Fernández Cubas's Hermanas de
sangre," in a special edition of the peer reviewed
journal, Letras Femeninas (Vol. 32, No.1, Verano
2006). Letras Femeninas is a publication of the
Asociación Internacional de Literatura Femenina
Hispánica (AILFH). The special edition of the journal
celebrates 25 years of scholarship by Feministas
Unidas and foregrounds positions on gender, writing,
ethnicity, identity and mother/sisterhood.

Beth Pallo (Environmental Science ’06 with Chemistry concentration) and Akiko Fillinger (Assistant Professor of Chemistry) presented their poster on an interdisciplinary project titled, “Multi-faced Evaluation of Sustainable Landscaping on a College Campus” at the 2nd International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology at Houston, TX, on August 19-22, 2006. This project aims to increase sustainability on our College’s landscaping practice by moving from tradition mono-crop lawns to a mixture that includes grasslands and wildflowers. (http://ic017040.ithaca.edu/~cns/projects.html) We will monitor soil chemistry, biodiversity, economics of lawn vs. non-lawn landscaping, and attitudes of the college community. Beth’s poster presentation was well received by many environmental scientists and engineers from all over the world.
