The Office of Human Resources is pleased to let you know that HealthNow will begin processing Ithaca College claims from their Buffalo Customer Service Center which will allow representatives to be available to members later in the evening. Effective September 26, 2005, the customer service hours will be from 8:30am to 9pm, Monday - Friday.

Ithaca College has launched several new initiatives to assist those affected by Hurricane Katrina. The College will make a direct institutional contribution to a student-organized fund-raising campaign, allow for employees to donate vacation time toward relief efforts, and provide paid time off for employees to volunteer with relief agencies.

Effective January 1, 2006 the rates for chargeback for audio visual production labor cost will rise to $8.50 an hour per technician to keep pace with the increase in the minimum wage.

Stephen Sweet's article "Practicing Radical Pedagogy: Balancing Ideals with Institutional Constraints." will be published in the forthcoming book Excellent Teaching in the Excellent University: The Search for Voice Among Faculty and Students (Jerome Rebow [ed.]. Academic Press).

After almost 25 years of service to Ithaca College, Gladys Ward, risk manager, will be retiring on October 14. Gladys will be moving to Princeton, New Jersey and then on to her home in Delaware. Gladys has developed a very customer-oriented risk management department during her time at the College and her presence will be missed by those who have worked closely with her over the years.

Susan Weisend, art, was invited to participate in a group exhibition of prints at the Washington Printmakers Gallery, Washington, DC, in July, 2005.

Her work was also part of a print portfolio exhibited in Berlin, Germany, in September, 2005.

Please join us at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22 for non-fiction readings by Bob Klier and student Sarah Roe of the Department of Writing. An open reading will follow.

Professor of Politics Asma Barlas presented a talk on "Women Encountering
the Qur'an: Scripture, Reading, and Authority," in the Islamic Studies Program
of George Mason University, Virginia, on Sept. 19th.

Her book chapter, "Globalizing Equality: Muslim Women, Theology, and
Feminisms," has been published in On Shifting Ground: Muslim Women in the
Global Era, Fereshteh Nouraie-Simone (ed.), NY: The Feminist Press, 2005.

During the 2005-06 academic year, the Office of the Provost and the Center for Faculty Excellence will offer a series of 3 workshops on academic advising. You are cordially invited. The series opens on September 26th with a workshop to be given by Denise Benjamin-McDermitt, assistant registrar, on all the forms, processes, and elements of Degree Navigator you will need to keep in mind when advising a student.

We are calling on all students and faculty members who oppose the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to unite and make our voices heard through a day of education. Events will be held on the Commons, as well as at Cornell and Ithaca College starting at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2005, when we meet at the Textor Ball to march down to the Commons to kick off Orange Friday.
