On Tuesday April 22, 2003 Norman D. Wall, associate director of public safety, was given the Douglas MacArthur Youth Service Award by the Newfield Masons. He is a non-Mason who has given exemplary service to the youth of our community. Norm is a major contributor of time and energy to youth programming in Newfield and Tompkins County.

Ithaca College, which is 7-1 in Empire 8 play (16-8 overall), clinched the Empire 8 baseball championship with St. John Fisher's sweep of Rochester Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Ithaca has now won three straight Empire 8 titles and a total of 22 conference championships.

Ithaca College swept host Rochester Institute of Technology in a doubleheader on Tuesday to clinch the Empire 8 regular-season title for the third straight year. Ithaca won 7-1 and 6-2, hitting four home runs in the two games.

Roger W. Hecht, writing, has published The Erie Canal Reader: 1790-1950, from Syracuse University Press -- a collection of poems, travel narratives, and fiction on the Erie Canal by major British and American writers such as Frances Trollope, Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Samuel Hopkins Adams.

Bei Dao, the best known living Chinese poet, was forced into exile after his poems were used as rallying cries by protestors at Tiananmen Square. He has continued to be an international voice for free artistic expression and human rights.
