In my September 6 Intercom message, I outlined some of the steps Ithaca College has been taking to move us forward in becoming the community of learning, personal growth, and mutual respect that it is intended to be.

Since that time, we have continued to encounter episodes that challenge our goal of creating a respectful and inclusive culture in which we identify difference as a source of strength rather than division. There is no place at Ithaca College for actions, whether they be through words or deeds, that denigrate or marginalize any individual or group on the basis of race, religion, sexual identity, or social status.

Thu., Oct. 22, 4 p.m., Friends 309 -- A free and open-to-all workshop with award winning film director and screenwriter, Jay Craven, and film composers, Judy Hyman and Jeff Claus. Craven has done seven feature films with actors including Martin Sheen, Kris Kristofferson, Michael J. Fox, Bruce Dern, Jacqueline Bisset, Ernie Hudson, Genevieve Bujold and more. Hyman and Claus have done music for over 20 feature and nationally broadcast documentary films and have worked with Craven on many of his films.

Sponsored by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and Beyond Benign (a non-profit educational organization based in Massachusettes), the IC Chemistry Department hosted a day-long hands-on workshop on "Green Chemistry" geared toward high school teachers. The workshop, attended by 30 teachers from 16 different counties, emphasized the use of environmentally benign lab activities designed to illustrate important topics in chemical education. Many thanks to all involved for an engaging and innovative day.

On Tuesday, October 20th, 2015, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fitness Center, Ithaca College will hold its second "POD" event to vaccinate staff, faculty, and students against the seasonal flu!

Please dress appropriately to be able to receive a shot in the upper arm!!

In order to greatly expedite the POD, all faculty, staff, and students who plan to receive the flu shot at this event are asked to print the Influenza Vaccine Screening and Consent form and Vaccine Information Sheet, found at the following link and bring the completed form to the Fitness Center when you come for your shot: www.ithaca.edu/sacl/healthcenter/docs/FluImmunization.pdf
