Many thanks to the 11 students who volunteered at the Los Angeles Autism Walk, held on April 24, 2010 at the Rose Bowl.  These students, under the guidance of adjunct faculty member Stan Landes (also the advocacy chair for the LA chapter of Autism Speaks), assisted in the petition drive for senatorial support for Autism research related legislation.  In addition to these student volunteers, three students also participated in the annual fundraising walk.

20,000 people attended the Autism walk and raised over 1.2 million dollars. This was ICLA's third year participating as volunteers and walkers - and certainly the largest group.

The St. Petersburg (Russia) Chamber Philharmonic under professor Jeffery Meyer's direction will be making its United States debut in "Wall To Wall Behind the Wall" at Symphony Space in New York City.  Full details of this performance.  The orchestra will present music by Shostakovich, Schnittke, Pärt, Lutoslawski, Gubaidulina, Bacewicz, Slonimsky and Buzina.

On May 6th William Lenga and Paul Warrender, received the Presidential Citation Award from Sodexo. This honor is given to Sodexo employees who are credited with saving a life. Tom Rosier, District Manager and Jeffrey Scott, Area General Manager administered the awards.

As we prepare for our 115th Commencement on Sunday, May 23, 2010, I would like to provide you with some information regarding the academic procession. The procession will form at 8:30 a.m. outside in the academic quad if it’s nice weather, or inside the enclosed walkway beginning at Job Hall and extending through the Campus Center if it is raining. Please see below for information on forming the academic procession if Commencement is indoors. The academic procession will begin at 9:00 a.m. and the Commencement ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. All guests will be encouraged to be seated by 8:45 a.m.

You and your family are invited to the Commencement Eve Gala Concert on Saturday, May 22, at 8:30 p.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium. Admission is free.

Directed by Professor Dana Wilson, this year's theme is "Blues in the Night:  An American Journey" and features the symphony orchestra, choir, marimba band, jazz ensemble, and soloists in an exciting and entertaining one-hour program.

If you prefer to avoid the packed house and traffic of this popular concert, you and your family and friends are welcome to attend the dress rehearsal on the previous evening, Friday, May 21, at 8:30 p.m. The dress rehearsal is a polished performance that is attended each year by hundreds of people, and provides a wonderful opportunity to experience the concert in a more relaxed setting.

Anthropology through Film

 Course Description and Objectives:

 The online course will be an overview of the relationship between cultural anthropology and film. We will watch a variety of films by ethnographic filmmakers and anthropologists, as well as “Hollywood” style documentary films that cover cultural representations and viewpoints to discuss how these two genres inform, converge and diverge from the groups represented. Discussion and critical analysis of the readings and films are an integral part of the course.   This class will also address (a) what films show (and do not show); (b) how Western culture uses images of non-Western peoples; and (c) how non-Western peoples use images of themselves.&

Seniors Nick Santos and Heather Newberger's film "Kiddo" screened at the Indie Spirit Film Festival in Colorado on April 24, 2010.  "Kiddo" won the award for Best Student Film.

Written by Santos, “Kiddo” is the story of a twelve-year-old boy who is dealing with the conflict between the innocence of childhood and the tribulations of growing up.  The Indie Spirit Film Festival is an annual event for filmmakers (professionals and students) and film lovers alike, with a superb program of feature films, shorts, docs, animation, and many other films from around the world.

Jungle’s Edge, a documentary Gossa Tsegaye, assistant professor in the Department of Television-Radio, has been accepted into the 2010 Theodore Case Film Festival. The film is about daily life in the Jungle, the wooded area near Ithaca's Inlet that for decades has served as a home for the homeless.

The festival’s mission is to further the creative legacy of Theodore Case and the Case Research Laboratory by promoting the film and video arts in Central New York. Tsegaye’s documentary will be screened at the Auburn Public Theater on June 5, 2010.

Marlena Grzaslewicz, Pendleton Endowed Chair and Assistant Professor in the Department of Cinema, Photography, and Media Arts, worked on the upcoming PBS special, Into the Deep: America, Whaling & The World. The film, part of the American Experience series, will air on Monday, May 10 at 9 p.m.

Into the Deep was written and directed by Ric Burns. In March, Grzaslewicz invited Burns and three other collaborators who worked on Into the Deep to Ithaca for a seminar that focused on the interconnectedness of image, music, and sound in the filmmaking process. Grzaslewicz served as dialogue editor for the film.

“NewsWatch16” was named the National Winner for "Best All-Around Television Newscast" in the 2009 Mark of Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ).

"NewsWatch 16" recently won the “Best Newscast” award in SPJ’s Regional 1 competition. Each regional winner advances to the national competition. National Mark of Excellence Award judges choose one national winner in each category and two national finalists (runners-up).
