Each year 1.5 million people are diagnosed with cancer. The Pan Massachusetts Challenge is one of the largest fundraisers dedicated to cancer research. Over the past 26 years they have raised $145 million for cancer research and treatment at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston, MA. All proceeds from this benefit will go directly to the PMC. www.pmc.org. All events are FREE, but DONATIONS will be accepted.

ITHACA, NY—Ellis L. Phillips Jr., who oversaw sweeping changes to Ithaca College’s structure while serving as its fifth president from 1970 to 1975, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 28, at his home in Massachusetts. He was 85. Details about a memorial service will be announced shortly.

Maymanah Farhat will present “From the Ashes of Lebanon: Cultural Destruction and Resistance,” a lecture-slide show, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 4, in the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College. Ms. Farhat’s talk includes works by Lebanese artists that were made before, during, and after Israel’s recent invasion of Lebanon. This event is free and open to the public.

Soprano Sharon Sweet will return to the Ithaca College School of Music in early October to give two free master classes to voice students. Sweet—who has performed at such venues as the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, the Paris Opera and London’s Royal Opera House—earned her Master of Music degree from the school in 1978. The public is welcome to attend the classes, which are on Friday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 7, at noon, both in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.

Soprano Patrice Pastore, a member of the voice faculty at the Ithaca College School of Music, will present a free concert of “Goddesses and Rebels” on Thursday, October 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall at Ithaca College. All of the music on the program has a contemporary flavor and has either a woman poet or composer. Pianists Diane Birr and Andrea Merrill will collaborate with Pastore for this concert, which will include music by Copland, Bernstein, Musto, Tann, Hoiby, Walton, Britten and others.
