NSF grant in Mathematics

Ithaca College has just received an additional $200,000 from the National Science Foundation to fund activities involved with the nationally recognized COMPASS program, directed by Eric and Margaret Robinson with John Maceli in the Department of Mathematics.

The Office of Career Services is pleased to announce that Ms. Terri Moore, the national college relations program manager for Time Warner Cable will be visiting Ithaca College on Thursday, October 6, 2005 as an employer-in-residence.

National Coming Out Day is approaching. Our campus observance of Coming Out Day will be held on Thursday, October 6. Events will include:
• Noon -- The student group Prism will hold a rally at Free Speech Rock.
• 7:00 p.m. -- Performance artist, poet, and playwright Lenelle Moise ’02 will be our featured Coming Out Day guest artist, in Emerson Suite B.

The theme of this year’s national observance is “Talk About It.”

Is there a lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) person in your life? Do you work with LGBT students? Does your curriculum include topics about sexual minority youth, adults, or families?

The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to announce the opening “Light Boxes/Dark Rooms,” a traveling exhibition organized and circulated by the De Pree Gallery, Hope College, Michigan, on Thursday, October 6.

“Light Boxes/Dark Rooms” presents work by three contemporary Japanese artists, Shinji Ogawa, Tomoaki Shitara, and Ko Yamada, who explore basic themes in art such as the nature of imagery and the nature of looking. Their sources, which include Zen philosophy, postmodern theories, and contemporary film, demonstrate a sophisticated and erudite knowledge of the world.

Composer, writer, and lecturer Michael Colgrass will be the focus of two October events at Ithaca College as the School of Music's 2005-6 Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition. Choral Collage This Weekend

The Ithaca College School of Music’s five choral ensembles will present a free joint concert on Sunday, October 9 at 3:00 p.m. in Ford Hall. Participating ensembles will be the Choir and Madrigal Singers under Lawrence Doebler’s direction, the Chorus and Women’s Chorale led by Elizabeth Swanson, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by Lauri Robinson-Keegan.

The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "Daniel Jackson: Upon Reflection," curated by Cheryl Kramer, on Thursday, October 6.

"Upon Reflection" offers the viewer a glimpse into the intimate, playful world of Daniel Jackson’s still-life paintings. This body of work is characterized by a small selection of objects brought into a unified composition through subtle tonal variations within a virtually monochromatic background. Enhancing the intimacy of the works is their small scale and simple, but monumental, design. The artist subtly captures the effects of light and the textures of objects though his sophisticated handling of paint.

Jennifer Hayghe, an assistant professor of music performance at Ithaca College’s School of Music, will present a free recital on Friday, October 7 at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. The program includes Bach’s “Partita in D Major,” Beethoven’s “Sonata, Op. 110,” and works by Debussy, Faure, and Grieg.
