Teaching Discussions Continue

Open discussions following the week of workshops on course design continue on Wednesday, June 29, 2:00-3:00 in CHS 201. The last group was a lively exchange of strategies for reducing anxiety, using WebCT effectively, and helping students keep up with the reading. These discussions are open to anyone, whether or not you are a faculty member and whether or not you attended the workshops.

A task force chaired by Dean Art Ostrander and containing broad representation from knowledgeable faculty and staff across campus recommended earlier this year the creation of a Department of Education in the School of Humanities and Sciences to replace the current Center for Teacher Education.

Buzzsaw Haircut, Ithaca College's student-run alternative news/media magazine, was recognized by the Independent Press Association's Campus Journalism Program. The publication received two Campus Independent Journalism Awards including Best Independent Campus Publication of the Year with a Budget under $10,000.

Jazz saxophonist Chris Vadala will give a free concert on Tuesday, June 28 at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall at Ithaca College. He will collaborate with guitarist Steve Brown, bassist Miles Brown, and drummer Tom Killian. The concert is part of a weeklong saxophone workshop.

Stephen Sweet (sociology) and Kerry Strand (Hood College) coedited a special issue of the journal Teaching Sociology on the subject of Cultivating Quantitative Literacy. The issue will appear in 2006.

The Ithaca College Toastmaster Club was recognized as a Select Distinguished Club for 2004-5 from Toastmasters International. In order to qualify for the award, clubs must achieve seven of the ten goals set out each year for each club, as well as maintain 20 members or have a net growth of at least 5 members.

Course Design Discussions

Weekly one-hour discussions are scheduled through July as followup from the week of workshops on course design that took place in May. All are welcome to the discussions, to one or more, and independent of having attended the workshops. The next is Thursday June 23, 9:30-10:30 am, in CHS 200.

Luke Keller, assistant professor of physics, has received funding as a coinvestigator through NASA's Astrobiology Science and Technology Instrument Development program. He and a team of scientists from NASA, the University of Texas at Austin, and Cornell University will upgrade a new camera system to be flown on the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

After over 35 years of dedicated service to Ithaca College, Bill Miller, master techician-painter in the physical plant department, has retired. Bill started working at Ithaca College in December of 1969 as a painter and, through hard work, moved up the ranks into the master technician position in 2002.
