Update (May 20, 2009): The College has lifted its ban on College-sponsored travel to Mexico. Please see this May 20 Intercom story for more details.

As of May 3, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continues to recommend that U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico because of the spread and severity of the H1N1 influenza (swine flu) in that country.

Some of the U.S. swine flu cases have been linked to persons who have traveled to Mexico. The CDC is concerned that travel to Mexico presents a serious health risk for the traveler and for others who might be exposed to the flu upon the traveler's return to the United States.

The Faculty Development Committee and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs are pleased to announce the five recipients of the 2008-9 Faculty Excellence Awards. The recipients are:

The Ithacan has once again been named the best non-daily student newspaper in the Northeast by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). The SPJ -- the largest professional organization of reporters and editors in the country -- presented the paper with the First Place Mark of Excellence Award at its Region 1 conference on April 25 in Philadelphia.

In addition, senior Jennifer Nevins's story, "That's How They Roll," about a local roller derby team, won the First Place Mark of Excellence Award in the feature writing category. Senior Erica R. Hendry's "Jazz Man," a profile of recently retired music professor Steve Brown, took second place in the feature writing category. The stories appeared in the October 23, 2008, and April 24, 2008, issues of the Ithacan, respectively.

John Fracchia's films were selected for the first annual film festival of the National Dance Association at its annual conference in Tampa, Florida on April 2, 2009.  

He screened Danse Enchantée, Celestial Somesthesis, and Outside-In(finite) -- the latter two of which were also shown at the Handwerker Gallery in January as part of the "Thursdays at the Handwerker" series.
