Asma Barlas, Director of CSCRE and professor of Politics, made two presentations in the Netherlands over Thanksgiving. The first was at the invitation of the Philosophy Department of the University of Amsterdam on "Women's Self-Emancipation Through the Qur'an," at the de Balie Cultural Center on November 21st. The second, "Does the Qur'an Support Gender Equality?" was given at the University of Groningen on November 23rd. This was a keynote address for the workshop on "Islam and Autonomy" organized by the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies.

Rebecca F. Plante(Sociology) will discuss her research 'HOOKING UP' ON CAMPUS; SEX IN THE LITTLE CITY sponsored by the Bronfenbrenner Life Course Center (BLCC) on Thursday November 30, 2006, 12:00-1:30, 114 MVR Hall, Cornell University Campus.

On Thursday, November 30th, Ithaca College Theatre opens the adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull by the award-winning playwright Tom Stoppard. Stoppard has written and adapted numerous well-known plays and films, including the Academy–Award winning Shakespeare in Love, for which he earned an Oscar for best original screenplay.

Syracuse Symphony bassoonist David Ross and three of his colleagues will give a free recital of music of bassoon and strings on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall. The concert will include works by Bernard Heiden, Franz Krommer, Franz Danzi, and a composition by Bernard Garfield, former principal bassoonist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The string players are violinist Fred Klemperer, violist Heather Fais-Zampino, and cellist Walden Bass. Together the four players total nearly 100 years of combined service in the Syracuse Symphony.

The Canadian Brass -- a quintet known for blending virtuosity with humor -- will give this year’s performance in the annual Shirley and Chas Hockett Chamber Music Concert Series at Ithaca College. Named after two longtime educators, the series honors the Hocketts’ love of music and devotion to Ithaca College and its School of Music. The free concert will take place on Monday, Nov. 27, at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
