The Ithaca College School of Music is pleased to announce Professor Dr. Deborah Rifkin has been selected as the recipient of the Mary I. Arlin '61 Award for Distinguished Teaching in Undergraduate Music Theory.

The Mary Arlin Award, given every four years, recognizes outstanding and distinguished teaching in undergraduate music theory courses. It is intended to recognize an individual faculty member for sustained commitment to teaching and for teaching that demonstrates a sustained level of excellence.

Dr. Rifkin received nominations and letters of support from colleagues, students, and alumni. She is being recognized for her efforts toward continued growth in the field, excellence in the subject matter, the ability to inspire students in original and creative thinking, accessibility to students, expressed enthusiasm and vitality in teaching and learning.

Congratulations to Dr. Rifkin and our thanks to Mary Arlin for her continued support of the Ithaca College School of Music.

Project Look Sharp is excited to announce that Cyndy Sheibe, Sox Sperry, and Chris Sperry will be presenting at the 2015 NAMLE/MILID Conference, “Celebrating Connectivity Across Cultures”. The conference will be held on June 26-27th at the Westin Hotel in Philadelphia.

Cyndy Scheibe and Chris Sperry will be leading two different workshops at this conference:

  • Cultural Paradigms & Key Concepts – Lessons from Iran, Bhutan, and Beyond

Noting that she was cut three times before finally making the United States Olympic team, Meghan Musnicki challenged the Ithaca College class of 2015 to “fail forward.” Musnicki, who won a gold medal as a member of the women’s crew team at the 2012 Summer Olympics, delivered the main address at the college’s 120th Commencement ceremony.

The U-Lot (Campus Center) parking lot will be closed at 6 a.m. this Monday, 5/20 as reserved event parking.  The lot will re-open for normal usage at 9 a.m.  Individuals seeking handicapped parking can still access the U-Lot by speaking to the lot attendant to request entry.

Marie Sandford, Clinical Associate professor in the Dept. of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and graduate students Dana Sharabi (Class of 2015), Maria Sanchez-Freeman (Class of 2015), Alexandra Fish (Class of 2015), and Erin Gatti (Class of 2015) presented their work at the 4th International Conference on English Pronunciation: Issues and Practices at the Institute of Phonetics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic

 

Their presentation, Comparing Instructional Approaches for Attaining Oral Proficiency in Adult English Language Learners shared results of pre, intermittent, and post -ratings of intervention outcomes for individuals working to modify their accented English.  

Marie Sanford, Clinical Associate Professor in the Dept. of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology, and graduate students, Anne Escobedo (Class of 2014) and Julie Balazs (Class of 2013) had a manuscript accepted for publication in The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Cultural Studies, Vol. 8, Issue3.  In their article, Identifying Reliable Predictors of Oral Proficiency in Non-native Speakers of American English, they reported on speakers of Mandarin-, non-continental Spanish-, Arabic-, and Hindi-influenced English.

In May, the authors were informed that this article was selected by the editorial board for inclusion in The International Journal of Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Annual Review.
