This popular and participatory education workshop will prepare our community for the visit on Nov. 17-19 with Marylen Serna Salinas, who is a local leader among the campesino (small farmers) movement in Colombia, and a national leader of the Agrarian Summit and the People's Congress. Ithaca community activists will learn about the unified political aspirations of campesinos, indigenous peoples, and Afro-Colombians, and discuss how these goals relate to our aspirations for political transformation in Ithaca.

The Writing Department will offer the 1-credit course "Writer's Practice," (WRTG 26100) online during the upcoming Winter Session, January 5-16. The course will serve students of varying levels of writing expertise & experience. In particular, enrolled students may work on:

a) an idea they've considered but never pursued for a novel, poetry collection, story collection, work of creative nonfiction, literary journalism, etc.
b) a project they've already started and want to continue.
c) a series of directed exercises to strengthen specific creative writing skills.
 
Enrolled students must commit to 3.5 hours of writing per day, distributed however they wish. By the end of each day, students will be accountable for sharing on the course website approximately 5 new pages of creative work.

Katie Hoover (HSHP senior) and professors Ellie Fitts Fulmer and Sherry Deckman (both Education) presented, “Heteronormativity and Ableism in Elementary and Middle School Health Textbooks” at the National Association for Multicultural Education Conference in Tucson, AZ. This roundtable presentation focused on Hoover, Fulmer, and Deckman’s current research on elementary and middle school textbooks’ depictions of race, class, gender, sexuality, and ability. This research team will present additional findings from this project at the American Educational Research Association conference in April in Chicago.

 

Nancy Reynolds, Program Director of Health Promotion in the Center for Counseling, Health and Wellness, presented a session at the annual conference of the New York State College Health Association (NYSCHA) on October 23, 2014. The NYSCHA conference is attended by college health professionals across NYS from disciplines including medical, nursing, counseling, and health promotion.

This year’s Cortaca Jug game is just a few days away and we know students in Ithaca are gearing up to celebrate what we hope will be a great win for Ithaca College Bomber Football. We also know that—win or lose—there’s going to be a lot of activity taking place on the South Hill this weekend. From those of us in the Class of 2015 who are heading into our last Cortaca Jug to the first-year-students who will be experiencing the excitement of this weekend for the first time—Cortaca is a time to celebrate what it means to be a Bomber.  We want to go out and support the sportsmanship and talents of those on the field and also wear the blue and gold with pride in the stands.

Beatriz Montilla (H&S senior) and Sherry Deckman (Assistant Professor of Education) presented, “Complicating Empathy and Critical Perspective-Taking in Multicultural Teacher Education Coursework” at the National Association for Multicultural Education Conference in Tucson, AZ. This interactive workshop drew on a book chapter the two co-authored that is to be published this winter. The workshop focused on the challenges of cultivating empathy in teacher education coursework that focuses on issues of race and equity.
