The Environmental Studies and Sciences Department’s Jason Hamilton recently returned from a week-long tracking and nature awareness course funded by a grant from the I.C. Instructional Development Fund. The Tracker School, located in New Jersey’s Pine Barrens, was founded in 1978 by Tom Brown Jr, America’s most renowned tracker and wilderness survival expert.

Once again, Park School students show they know how to make a good film -- and do it quickly. Invited for the third consecutive year to participate in student filmmaking competition at the Lake Placid Film Forum (listed one of the top 25 coolest film festivals in the country by MovieMaker Magazine), Dave Reynolds '11, Jeff Picarello '10, David Gelb '10 and Michael Sutter '11 won the Audience Choice Award for the film "Escape."  

With a 24-hour window, the team scripted, shot and edited an eight-minute original film that included required elements such as a renowned downtown Lake Placid storefront and two Mark Twain quotes. Competing against four other invited schools -- Syracuse, SUNY Purchase, RIT and Burlington College -- the entries were screened in front of a live audience and before a panel of judges. The audience cast their votes choosing Team Ithaca for the Audience Choice Award for the second time in three years.

Professors William Harris Ressler and Scott R. Hamula, Department of Strategic Communication, and Wenmouth Williams Jr., Department of Television-Radio, published research titled "Baseball Teams, Radio Stations and Corporate Social Responsibility" in the spring 2010 issue of the International Journal of Integrated Marketing Communications (IJIMC). Their paper examines the synergistic outcomes that can develop when professional baseball teams, local radio stations, corporate sponsors, and benefiting nonprofit organizations work together in a cause-related marketing relationship.

The IJIMC is devoted to the dissemination of information about the teaching and practice of the range of disciplines under the umbrella of integrated marketing communications, including direct/interactive marketing, database marketing, public relations, advertising, sales promotion, and other forms of promotional communications for both for-profit and not-for-profit entities and about how they can be integrated for more effective results.

Associate Professor of Politics Naeem Inayatullah served as a Visiting Scholar at the International Relations Institute, Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, May-June 2010. He participated in a roundtable titled "The Fate of Critique in International Relations Theory," offered an undergraduate workshop "The Political Economy of the Third World," and a graduate seminar "Inequality in World Politics."

Arhlene A. Flowers, assistant professor in the Department of Strategic Communication, will present a paper on June 25 at the International Communication Association's annual conference in Singapore. The paper, on virtual junk food playgrounds, is included in a session on Virtual Worlds for Children: Salient Issues, Diverse Methods, International Perspectives. The research paper was in collaboration with Katalin Lustyik, assistant professor in the Department of Television-Radio.

The International Communication Association (ICA) is an academic association for scholars interested in the study, teaching, and application of all aspects of human and mediated communication.

Bassoonist Lee Goodhew Romm will be performing at the International Double Reed Society's 2010 Conference in Norman, Oklahoma, this Saturday.  She will present "Avatar" by IC composer Dana Wilson, with alum Josh Oxford at the piano.  After that she'll spend a week at the Oberlin Conservatory's Baroque Performance Institute.

Asma Barlas, professor and Director, CSCRE, gave one of the keynote addresses at a Conference on Religion and the Body organized by the Donner Institute for the Research in the History of Religion, Åbo Akademi University, in Åbo (Turku), Finland from June 16-18.  The title of her paper was "Abraham in the Qur'an: the unbound body."

A week ago today Butterfield Stadium was ablaze with pirates, tents, and many shades of purple as Ithaca hosted the Tompkins County Relay for Life for the very first time! Attendees could not stop gushing about the new location...Ithaca was a big hit!  At midnight IC Hope pulled the winners of our beautiful pirate themed baskets and had the radio personality on stage pull the winner of our Disney Extravaganza.  Who were the lucky winners?  Read on!
